- This classification is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

- Effective June 28, 2024 - 4.25% increase
- Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

**RECRUITMENT / POSITION INFORMATION**
This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Sheriff’s Cadet extra help positions within the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
**THE DEPARTMENT**
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is among the largest in the nation, providing exemplary law enforcement services focused on a collaborative, dedicated and innovative approach to public safety. Our nearly 4,000 sworn and professional staff are committed to serving the needs of Orange County through six organizational Commands comprised of 23 Divisions. Together, these Commands and Divisions provide services including land, air and sea-based patrol, custody operations, investigative services, emergency management, coroner services, forensics, and specialty operations, among an extensive list of other public safety services.

**THE OPPORTUNITY**
The Sheriff’s Cadet Program provides valuable training and experience to those interested in a career in law enforcement. In a training capacity and under direct supervision, Cadets perform a variety of routine and progressive law enforcement related duties of greater responsibility. Cadets must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in a minimum of 6 college course units. In addition, Cadets must be service-oriented and possess knowledge of basic office practices; business English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation; strong communication skills and the ability to read and understand laws, rules and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures; and carry out instructions, analyze situations and determine appropriate responses.

**WORK SCHEDULE**
Shifts vary by assignment, but may include days, night, weekends and holidays (20 hours max).
**DUTIES**
Incumbents** **in this position support Sheriff’s Department Personnel in an office and field setting with various law enforcement related functions such as:

- Record keeping, answer telephones, and filing
- Assist in the processing and booking of evidence
- Assist with activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
- Perform fingerprinting of individuals
- Assist with equipment and weapon inventory and maintenance
- Assist with inventory control of departmental supplies
- Provide information and assistance to the public
- Assist with DUI check points and Command Posts at major crime scenes
- Assist with transporting Department vehicles
- Direct traffic at special public events

**Applicants are required to be enrolled in college courses (minimum of 6 units) and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 ("C" grade) for all courses taken. Proof of college enrollment must be provided to the Department within the first 90 days of employment.**

**License Required**:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, is required by date of appointment.
**SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS**
To be selected for a position with the Orange County Sheriff's Department applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit history, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services (N.A.C.E.S.).
