The incumbent is primarily responsible for preparing and dissecting surgical pathology specimens. The incumbent supervises the work of the gross room staff and the daily operation of the gross room and autopsy services. Teaches grossing techniques to pathology residents.

**Responsibilities**:
**Essential Job Functions**:

- The identification of essential functions below is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties that may be assigned to this position, nor does it restrict the duties which may be assigned to this position if such duties reasonably relate to the position._
- LAB_ Under supervision of a pathologist, prepares surgical specimens for gross description and dissection. This includes but is not limited to: describes gross anatomic features; dissects surgical specimens; prepares tissue for histologic examination; and photographs the gross specimens. Performs postmortem examinations as needed. 65%
- LAB_ Assists in teaching residents dissection of complex surgical specimen and frozen section techniques. 20%

**Required Qualifications**:

- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
- Knowledge of laws and regulatory requirements relating to decedent affairs
- Knowledge of laws and regulatory requirements for CAP, JCAHO and California State laboratory law for Anatomic Pathology
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Completion of a 2-year Pathology Assistant program and Pathology Assistant board certified or eligible by hire date
- Completion of a 2-year Pathologists’ Assistant program (NAACLS accredited) and ASCP Board Certified
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Science field
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

**Preferred Qualifications**:

- Experience working in a UC and/or union environment
- Experience in an Anatomic Pathology department
