School Counselor

A school counselor plays a crucial role in the academic, social, and emotional development of students. Their primary responsibility is to support students in achieving their academic and personal goals by providing counseling services and guidance.
**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**:
Under the direction of the Executive Principal, the School Counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student success. This includes assisting students in developing academic, career, and personal/social skills to help them reach their full potential. The counselor collaborates with parents, teachers, and other professionals to create a supportive and nurturing environment for all students.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide individual and group counseling to students to address academic, personal, and social issues.
- Conduct assessments to identify students' strengths, interests, and needs.
- Develop and implement counseling plans to help students achieve academic and personal goals.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to support student success.
- Provide crisis intervention and support to students in need.
- Advocate for students and promote a positive school culture.
- Participate in professional development activities to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.
- Coordination of universal curriculum to support academic success, social-emotional learning, and high school & career exploration.
- Participation in and advocacy for students at IEP, 504, Talented and Gifted, and other student-focused meetings
- Support and facilitation of school wide mental health and inclusion initiatives.
- Data analysis to identify trends in student needs/challenges and develop strategic solutions.
- Acting as a systems change agent to improve equity, access, achievement, and opportunities for all students.
- Support middle school students with high school transition.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Principal or Chief Growth Officer.
JOB SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
- The School Counselor also demonstrates the ability to provide positive behavioral support to students in a group and in an individual setting; demonstrates an understanding of the federal, state, and local mandates governing the determination and delivery of counseling services; displays the ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, and school-based staff, students, parents and community members.
- The School Counselor possesses excellent human relations skills and a working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal form.
LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
WI DPI license required - School Counselor
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
- Master's degree in school counseling
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Previous experience as a School Counselor
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention - Inclusion as a model for tiered support
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of counseling techniques and best practices.

- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with students, other faculty, staff, and parents as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. The position also entails significant walking, bending, standing, stooping, and possible physical interventions in order to maintain a safe learning environment Assignment may require the ability to physically move students or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, position students in specialized equipment.
**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.

- The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
- The employee will have unsupervised access to children that are part of La Casa’s educational programs.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
