**Position Summary**:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. **While performing work duties as a Lifeguard 1**:
**Essential Functions**:

- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Be rescue ready at all times when on deck and during scheduled work hours.
- Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
- Conduct and monitor all swim tests prior to participants engaging in pool activities.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Provide emergency care and treatment as necessary and until medical professionals arrive.
- Perform chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
- Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor.
- Maintain open lines of communication with participant, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**While performing work duties as a Swim Instructor 1**:
**Essential Functions**:

- Ensure a safe swimming environment for all participants.
- Prepare for and teach all assigned classes. The use of lesson plans, session plans and evaluation sheets may be necessary.
- Ensure scheduled shift is covered at all times.
- Test and evaluate students at east twice during the swim session. With supervisor assistance, issue progress reports to all students.
- Must be suited, on deck and ready to perform all duties during assigned shift.
- Follow and enforce safety standards, policies and procedures.
- Attend all staff meetings, trainings and other YMCA functions as required by Supervisor.
- Maintain open lines of communication with participant, coaches, referee, staff and supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
1. Must be at least 16 years of age, over18 years of age preferred.
2. Must be currently attending high school or equivalent, or have high school diploma or equivalent.
3. Current swim instructor certification from either YMCA or American Red Cross, including First Aid, CPR and AED required and must be maintained and kept in current status. If being hired with an American Red Cross Certification, must cross over to a YMCA Swim Instructor certification within the first 90 days of employment.
4. Must pass a pre-employment practicum and written exam.
5. Be able to perform all requirements for swim instructor certification and demonstrate skills as required ( example: in-service trainings)
6. Criminal clearance including fingerprints
7. Health screening with negative TB and negative drug test screening.
8. Complete all online required training(s).
