Institute on Aging’s Enrichment Center in the Presidio is home to our Adult Day Program and is seeking an outgoing, compassionate, and creative individual to facilitate therapeutic activities designed to accommodate the interests and functional abilities of our diverse group of participants living with dementia or other forms of cognitive or physical impairment.

As the Engagement Coordinator you will work onsite at our Enrichment Center located in the beautiful Presidio providing supervision and hands-on assistance to participants while guiding a passionate team of staff, students and outside volunteers.

Through a combination of large and small groups, the coordinator will plan and engage Adult Day Program participants in cognitive, social, and physical activities, and support staff and volunteers in facilitating scheduled and spontaneous programs. By accessing technology and other outside resources, you will strive to incorporate innovation and community collaboration to create exceptional experiences.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Create dynamic and meaningful daily activities generating exceptional experiences for participants
- Generate enthusiasm & interest with upcoming events by developing an activity calendar and upon Director’s approval, print, distribute and post calendar
- Dynamically engage participants to achieve optimal participation by offering small group activities in parallel to large group to support a range of abilities and interests
- Creatively evolve program activities to include gardening and use of gorgeous, secured outdoor patio
- Increase art activities and purchase supplies to broaden tactile activities
- Identify & coordinator outside entertainers, instructors, and other community resources in consultation with the Program Director
- Schedule, prepare and facilitate large and small group activities which include but are not limited to physical exercise, news discussions, arts and crafts, music, cultural groups, and community outings
- Evaluate participant engagement, satisfaction, and program effectiveness through observation and formal assessment
- Utilize staff, volunteers and students to facilitate multiple groups simultaneously
- Assign and implement staff and volunteer schedules for execution of daily activities
- Incorporate innovative, empirically based tools to stimulate the social, cognitive, and physical functioning of individuals living with dementia
- Modify activities to meet the evolving needs and interests of the participants; increase engagement and sensory experiences whenever possible
- Coordinate holiday celebrations, birthday parties and family events recognizing participants’ cultural preferences
- With input from the Program Director, schedule, orient and support volunteers, including students and interns, in facilitating group and 1:1 activities; survey interests and skills whenever possible to match the volunteer to the most appropriate activity
- Encourage isolated participants towards group participation through one-on-one interactions
- Maintain and organize activity supplies to support program innovation and creativity
- Identify additional resources, including technology, to support physical and cognitive levels of participants as needed
- Contribute photos, videos and program highlights to monthly newsletter and other social media platforms; reference client media consents before promoting to the public
- Assist with all general activities to meet participants’ needs when necessary, including personal care, transportation, & meal service, as assigned
- Provide input on participant care plans
- Enforce and adhere to all safety and emergency policies & procedures and licensing requirements
- Actively participate in team meetings
- Support marketing events as needed
- Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree preferred; some post-high school education required.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

- One year of professional work or volunteer experience working with persons with dementia and / or other special needs preferred
- Experience energetically working in group settings, performing, or engaging individuals highly preferred
- Experience with activity or recreation programming preferred.
- Fluency in English required; second language helpful.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work well in a team.
