**Class Definition**:

- GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To perform professional field and laboratory duties in a radiological health program for the purpose of identifying, controlling or eliminating ionizing radiation health hazards resulting from the use of radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment; and to do related work as required.
- SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of a superior with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgement; work is reviewed for conformance to accepted radiological health methods and techniques.
- SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, supervises, evaluates and coordinates the work of a small technical staff.

**Illustrative Examples of Work Performed**:

- To perform professional field and laboratory duties in a radiological health program for the purpose of identifying, controlling or eliminating radiation health hazards resulting from the use of radioactive materials or radiation producing equipment.
- To plan, supervise and participate in the making of surveys and investigations of the effects of ionizing radiation apparatus upon technicians using it, patients receiving treatment and persons living or working in proximity to such apparatus; to recommend correction of imperfections in such apparatus and to instruct operators in the proper use of such equipment to keep radiation exposure to a minimum.
- To evaluate and supervise radiation monitoring studies of air, water, food, milk and plant life for determinations of concentrations of radioactive materials by means of field and laboratory radiological equipment.
- To evaluate radiation exposure potentials under working conditions, recommend permissible time limits of personnel exposures and minimum working distances from sources or radiation to prevent exceeding maximum permissible doses.
- To formulate rules and regulations pertaining to radiation protection procedures and standards and to consult with and make recommendations to the State Industrial Code Commission for Safety and Health relative to modifications in radiological health practices and standards.
- To prepare reports containing findings, analyses, conclusions and recommendations for the control and elimination of radiological health hazards.
- To participate in the review of plans and specifications for the design and development of radiation protection and control.
- To provide technical assistance to and cooperate in related radiological health activities with scientific and technical staff of the US Public Health Service, the US Atomic Energy Commission and other related federal and state departments and agencies.
- To confer with representatives of nuclear reactor and atomic fuel processing installations and representatives of appropriate federal agencies concerning the methods to be used by such installations for the disposal of gaseous and liquid wastes and the controls, standards, and health physics procedure to be observed.
- To serve as the Rhode Island State Representative on the New England States Radiological Health Committee.
- To do related work as required.

**Required Qualifications for Appointment**:
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of radioactive isotopes and ionizing radiation and its measurements; a thorough knowledge of chemistry, physics and mathematics as applied to the study and analysis of radiation control; a thorough knowledge of the methods used in handling radioactive materials, disposing of radioactive waste products, and of controlling radiation hazards; a thorough knowledge of laboratory radiation counters, radiation detecting instruments and the ability to use and calibrate them; a thorough knowledge of scientific methods used in analyzing physical and chemical substances and of the operation and use of laboratory equipment; a thorough knowledge of and familiarity with the rules and regulations of the State Occupational Radiation Protection Code relating to all aspects of radiological health, and of the standards, policies, and procedures used in effecting the provisions thereof; the ability to make surveys and prepare reports containing findings, analyses, conclusions and recommendations; the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other agencies, groups and associates; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Such as may have been gained through: graduation from a college of recognized standing with a major in civil, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, or the physical sciences, supplemented by advanced study in radiological health; and
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
