**Overview of Position**

Under the direction of the Dean of Student Development and Matriculation, the CalWORKs and EOPS/CARE Counselor will provide academic counseling, intensive case management support, and support the coordination of a program for special populations with focus on student parents.

Counselors provide resources to assist students in meeting their personal, educational and career objectives. All counselors are responsible for participating in the planning, development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of student success programs. This position provides intensive case management, collaboration with the County and County contractors, and comprehensive college counseling services for special populations. Services may include but are not limited to orientation to programs and services, assessment, educational and career advising (including degree and certificate options), transfer services, liaison with instructional departments and other educational institutions or community organizations. Major Responsibilities
- Provide guidance and counseling using a case-management model to special population students, particularly student parents.
- Identify the needs of student parents and assist with the development and coordination of the program.
- Perform academic advising to assist students in reaching their educational goals including certificate, degree or transfer.
- Respond to the intensive needs of special population students.
- Maintain current knowledge of EOPS/CARE & CalWORKs, childcare and County related polices, practices and guidelines through training and communication with appropriate agencies.
- Assist and advocate for students as they work with the County and County contractors
- Implement measures to track student progress to evaluate the success of program interventions.
- Provide work direction and guidance to assigned adjuncts, para-professional, clerical staff and student mentors; assist in the evaluation of assigned employees.
- Assist targeted students (student parents) to meet their key needs, with a particular focus on financial aid, childcare, housing and community resources.
- Assist students with the development of abbreviated and comprehensive education plans.
- Conduct individual and group counseling addressing personal, career and educational counseling topics.
- Provide counseling services for probationary and disqualified students; address and identify student academic concerns, file petitions and support students in cooperation with Financial Aid and instructional programs.
- Assist with the on-going planning and implementation of services and campus community information regarding special population students (foster youth, single parents, homeless, Dreamers, etc.).
- Provide campus inreach and community outreach services through presentations and individual consultations in order to promote services available through EOPS/NextUp/CARE and CalWORKs.
- Participate in the evaluation of department and institutional practices and programs as they affect students; use an evidence-based approach and data to assist EOPS Coordinator in developing program goals and student learning outcomes that support: retention, success, and transfer outcomes.
- Assist with preparation and implementation of college staff development and counseling intern programs.
- Conduct college orientations for new students, conduct academic planning workshops; participate in evaluation of program materials and recommend revisions as necessary.
- Identify and respond to the needs of additional special populations as assigned; assist with development of supportive interventions for additional populations.
- Participation in campus-wide and district committees.

Qualifications Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent,

**AND**
EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987, shall:
(1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages

**OR**
(2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses i
