Graduate Student Research Assistant

The Dept. of Life Sciences at Long Island University Post announces the opening for a Postdoctoral, beginning June 4, 2024. This position is supported by NSF Award # 2025009, under program NSF 20-513, Understanding the Rules of Life: Microbiome Theory and Mechanisms, for the corresponding grant entitled EF: Collaborative Research: MTM 2: Marine Invertebrate Microbiome Assembly, Diversification, and Coevolution.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Postdoctoral Fellow include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Fieldwork during the summer, including placing and retrieving settlement plates attached to cinderblocks, settlement lines, or other devices.

2. Processing collected plates by photographing said plates, preserving samples, keying out and identifying individual organisms, preparing samples for DNA analysis, and barcoding.

3. Supervising and mentoring undergraduate and high school students.

4. Laboratory management.

5. Library research 6. Analyzing, writing up, and publishing the resulting research in a peer-reviewed journal.

7. Grant writing

Compensation: The Postdoctoral Fellow position is full-time and will be paid at a rate of $60,000 per year. The contract will begin on June 4, 2024, and end on June 3, 2025, with the possibility of an extension thereafter.

Supervisor: The Graduate Research Assistant will report directly to Dr. Kent Hatch, the PI to whom the grant was awarded.
