The ESL specialist will instruct English Language Learners in academic, social, and cultural skills necessary to succeed in an educational environment. He/she will teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening at appropriate developmental and proficiency levels to facilitate students’ success in their academic program. He/she will also serve as a resource while the student is involved in the regular education setting.
- **Education**: Bachelor’s Degree or an acceptable equivalent.
- **Certification**: ESL K-12 Program Specialist.
- **Certification**: Active and valid Teaching Certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the assignment or position.
- **License**: N/A

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for delivering standards based curriculum and training and instruction for all students.
- Ability to plan a program of study that differentiates curriculum for individual learners or groups.
- Knowledge and ability to measure learning and review and evaluate testing scores and data.
- Ability to develop and maintain a safe classroom environment which maximizes the learning potential of each student.
- Knowledge of state standards.
- Ability to maintain students’ records, progress reports, teacher observation checklists, lesson plans, and other documentation required by the employer or school law.
- Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents, administrators, and community members.
- Ability to build and maintain working relationships with students, staff, parents, administrators, and community members.
- Ability to use laptop or desktop computer presentation and instructional software, current software/technology packages, and related equipment.
- Ability and knowledge to use the internet as an instructional aid and research tool.
- Ability and knowledge to use technology to communicate with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community members.
- Provide an appropriate educational program for English Language Learners.
- Maintain student records, including language proficiency testing, progress reports, teacher observation checklists, and other required paperwork.
- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments/evaluations of student abilities and progress.
- Maintain classroom organizations and management.
- Communicate regularly with parents concerning students’ program and academic progress.
- Work with other district staff in reinforcing student development.
- Integrate related services into the instructional program.
- Include English Language Learners in school activities.
- Monitor newly exited ELL students as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
- Consult with the administration on the needs of the ELL program.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Teaching, Learning and Technology and/or building principal.
- Accept special assignments within his/her own area of expertise, including preparing and presenting professional development workshops for both parents and staff.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear (40 decibel maximum) and verbally communicate.

Work Environment:
The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud, depending on the activity in the particular part of the day.

Terms of Employment:
Salary, work year, and other terms and conditions of employment as established by contract between Whitehall-Coplay School District, Superintendent, and the Whitehall-Coplay School District Board of Directors.

- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, lift, reach, communicate (vision, hearing, and speech), carry, or convey sufficient weight to safely and effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.
- Ability to independently ambulate in and around school buildings and office areas.
- Ability to travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support.

Pay: $58,046.00 - $79,850.00 per year
