The Blood Donor Center currently has three locations: Campus Blood Donor Center, Medical Center Blood Donor Center, and Mobile Collection sites. The incumbent will be assigned to a primary area but will be expected to work in all three areas as needed and is responsible for the accurate donor selection and follow through of identification and remediation of deficiencies in screening procedures. Sets-up and performs various apheresis and whole blood collection procedures including identification of donor reactions and appropriate intervention. Assists with patient / donor education and follow-up and uses the Nursing Process to assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient / donor care. May be required to act as a charge nurse at any of the three areas as needed.

- Maintain all charts and records in a timely, accurate, and appropriate manner. Document patient/donor observations/care appropriately in the computer, on flow sheets or wherever appropriate. Intervene appropriately in situations where basic life support systems are threatened. Accurately and appropriately perform quality control on equipment ensuring all appropriate records are kept as required. 10%
- Demonstrate clinical competence in the assigned area. Provide training and instruction to new staff as needed. Utilize clinical expertise to assist unit staff in providing patient/donor care and education. Provide effective leadership to the healthcare team. Assist with the writing and revision of donor center operating procedures as needed. 5%
- Create and maintain the sterile field. Accurately maintain and perform POCT and POCH-I CBC analyzer quality controls per standards. Understand and follow all standard operating procedures and regulations. Ensure nursing practice is within scope of licensure. Dispose of all waste, sharps, specimens, etc in accordance with departmental policies. 5%
- Appropriately plan, perform and chart automated apheresis procedures including set-up, run, quality control, troubleshooting and routine maintenance. Appropriately utilize the nursing process to identify and resolve the status of venous access, signs and symptoms of citrate sensitivity, alterations in vasomotor state, alterations in fluid volume and inadequate coagulation of extracorporeal circuit. Recognize critical deviations in patient/donor conditions, taking appropriate action and documenting intervention. Ensure nursing practice is evidence based. 30%

Provide educational materials to patients/donors in a timely manner. Effectively incorporate patient preferences into the plan of care. Make appropriate referrals to resolve patient /donor issues effectively. Act as a source of information for the patient/donor and articulately respond to questions. Provide resources and education about diagnosis and course of treatment and seek out education and new information to increase skill and knowledge in support of the patient/donor. Delegate patient/donor care activities to appropriate members of the health care team and assure care is safe and of high quality. 5%
