**DEFINITION**
Under general supervision of a Public Health Supervisor or a Violence Prevention Supervisor, a Public Health Planner works to strengthen policies, systems and community environments that influence health equity and prevent violence among Dane County residents. Public Health Planners are also responsible for strategic planning; program planning, assessment and implementation; policy development; public health surveillance and assessment; analysis and interpretation of public health data; collaborative work across sectors; and evaluation and measurement of community-wide and population-specific health promotion and improvement indicators.

**PUBLIC HEALTH PLANNERS may specialize in one of the following areas (more details are found in the respective position descriptions (PDs))**:
**Public Health Planner - Food Security**:Works in collaboration with internal and external partners to identify and develop population health approaches to improving food security and nutrition, particularly focusing on those that produce equitable health outcomes over time. Analyzes public health programs, policies and procedures and working with colleagues to make information accessible for decision making in public policy, systems improvement and planning. Helps shape public health priorities related to nutrition, food access and food security in Madison and Dane County.

**Public Health Planner - Policy**: Works in collaboration with internal and external partners to develop policy-based strategies that address the social determinants of health and promote health equity, with demonstrated skills in planning. Analyzes public health programs, policies and procedures and works with colleagues to make information accessible for decision making in public policy, systems improvement and planning.

**Public Health Planner - Technical Assistance and Evaluation**:Works in collaboration with internal and external partners to develop evaluation tools for use throughout the organization to increase and improve the impact of PHMDC’s work. Assists PHMDC staff in incorporating evaluation tools into their projects. Supports a culture of data-based decision making and continuous improvement and performance. Provides technical evaluation assistance to partners in the community who may not have access to evaluation training or expertise.

**Public Health Planner - Violence Prevention Coordinator**: Provides direction and coordination for PHMDC’s violence prevention Roadmap to Reducing Violence and associated violence prevention activities and initiatives. Provides leadership, coordination and support to the Madison and Dane County Violence Prevention Coalition and associated workgroups or committees. Assesses, plans, develops, implements and evaluates primary prevention and intervention strategies to address violence. This position does not typically provide direct services to the public, but rather is responsible for overall capacity building, collaboration with State and community stakeholders across multiple sectors, consultation, technical assistance, program development and evaluation, information dissemination, and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies.
