Job Summary

The Janitor maintains the building by providing custodial services. The Janitor reports to the Lead Supervisor with Support from Assistant Project Manager and cares for the facilities. Maintaining these responsibilities will help to ensure the health, safety and security of the public.

Primary Duties

These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.- Maintain building interior by dusting and polishing furniture, equipment, mirrors, and fixtures; washing windows, counters, walls, ceilings, and woodwork; sweeping, scrubbing, and waxing floors; cleaning and vacuuming drapes, furniture, and carpeting including carpet scrubbing; resupplying rest rooms; replacing light bulbs.- Maintain building accessibility and appearance by picking up papers and trash; replacing light bulbs.- Remove trash by emptying trash containers; transporting materials to disposal area; collecting recycling materials.- Keep cleaning equipment operational by following manufacturer's operating and care guidelines; completing operator repairs and parts replacement.- Maintain parts and equipment inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed parts, anticipating cleaning equipment replacement, and placing orders.

Additional Responsibilities- Maintain safe working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.- Flip dorm rooms by making beds, removing dirty linen for cleaning, and providing clean linen for replenishment.- Maintain continuity between shifts by documenting cleaning actions and noting areas requiring additional care or monitoring.- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results.- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) preferred.- At least one (1) year custodial experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment preferred.- Knowledge of the use of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) preferred.-
- Team building skills preferred.- Decision making skills preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects tools or controls. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, swooping, kneeling, lifting heavy objects, operating medium-weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors and moving desks and furniture. The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Note that operating floor polishers and waxers are particularly hard on back muscles. The incumbent must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The incumbent works on a daily basis with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can be very harmful to one’s health if not properly utilized. The incumbent also regularly cleans up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with. The condition of washrooms is often unpleasant. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
