**ABOUT US**

In 1924, Boyce Thompson Arboretum (BTA )was founded by mining magnate Colonel William Boyce Thompson. The desert landscape inspired Colonel Thompson to create the arboretum with the mission of educating people about desert plants and their uses in an arid environment.

This mission continues today, and Boyce Thompson Arboretum has grown in mission and size over its 100-year history. As an independent non-profit organization, the arboretum is located in Superior, Arizona. Situated at the base of Picket Post Mountain and adjacent to the Tonto National Forest, the Arboretum is located approximately 40 minutes from Mesa and one hour from downtown Phoenix. BTA welcomes over 145,000 visitors annually. At 372 acres, BTA is Arizona's oldest and largest botanical garden. BTA's collection comprises 4,030 taxa, 405 rare/endangered species, and over 30,000 individual plants. Along over 5 miles of trails, you will find plant exhibits from 11 of the world's deserts, a native riparian habitat, and colorful specialty gardens displayed alongside native Sonoran Desert vegetation. As an Audubon Important Bird Area, you will encounter many of the 275 bird species identified at BTA along with other native wildlife. It is not uncommon to see javelinas, bobcats, and a variety of native and migratory birds while working, hiking, and enjoying the grounds. BTA is an equal-opportunity equal opportunity employer. **RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Guide and manage strategic growth for the Education Department including the development of education and outreach programs and renovation of learning spaces on-site.
- Provide direction to Education staff in the development of programs that support the mission and goals of the arboretum. This includes assisting the Education Coordinator in developing. designing, and implementing inquiry-based, student-centered curricula and programs for elementary, middle, and high school students based on Arizona Science Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, outreach to local communities, and on-site visitor experiences.
- Develop and oversee the Education Department budget, including reporting of grant and donor-restricted funds.
- Participate in fund-raising and grant-writing activities that benefit education programs.
- Directly supervise the Volunteer and Visitor Engagement Coordinator to oversee. volunteer/docent programs and provide direction on training, programming that volunteers engage in, and overall communications.
- Develop and coordinate various adult education classes, on-site and virtually.
- Work with contract instructors to align program content with BTA mission and goals.
- Deliver presentations, tours, training, and programs to internal and external audiences.
- Provides accurate and timely information for marketing and website.
- Supervise and mentor staff within the Education Department.
- Track and measure the effectiveness of all major initiatives and programs undertaken by the Education Department, ensuring consistency with the Arboretum's strategic vision, and make recommendations for continued improvement.
- Assess the completeness and scientific accuracy of all material and programs.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to achieve strategic goals of the organization.
- Provide leadership and engagement in the larger public garden community and work collaboratively on shared goals and projects.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Bachelor's degree in education, environmental studies, or related field, Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum five years of experience managing, designing, and implementing educational programs, preferably in a public garden or informal science education setting for diverse audiences of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Experience supervising staff and volunteers.
- Knowledge of arid-lands ecology.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Ability to demonstrate initiative, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work weekends and some evenings.
- Must be able to sit and stand for long periods.
- Must have a valid AZ Driver's License.
