This position is responsible for creating hospital disease and procedure indices by coding and abstracting pertinent data from inpatient acute, transitional care, acute rehab records and all outpatient record types. Provides diagnostic and procedural information, MS-DRG or APR-DRG, to the Business Office so that a bill for services can be generated.

**Required Skills**:

- Demonstrates complete technical knowledge of ICD-10-CM disease and ICD-10-PCS procedural coding.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology in addition to medical terminology.
- Familiarity with computers and the general principles of health information science is preferred.
- A high level of professionalism and effective communication skills is needed for interaction with physicians, physician office staff, and hospital staff.

**Required Experience**:

- High school diploma and successful completion of college courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology and an AHIMA approved coding class are preferred.
- Minimum of two years’ experience with ICD-10-CM coding in an acute hospital setting required. AHIMA credential as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
- Experience in using a computerized abstracting system and encoding software is preferred.
- Experience with Clinical Documentation Integrity program preferred.
- Experience with encoding software program and query writing software preferred. Basic windows and mouse skills required.
