DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform more detailed and complicated law enforcement tasks including conducting criminal investigations; preparing cases for presentation to the District Attorney's Office for criminal prosecution; provide follow-up services to victims; assist law enforcement agencies; facilitate collaborative efforts with service agencies and provide training to schools, conferences and inter/intra-agencies; and perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Collects information regarding individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activities through observation, covert operations, interviews, interrogations and department and outside agency record files; develops liaisons with persons from other police agencies for mutual exchange of criminal information; develops and maintains confidential sources of information with individuals and organizations; designs and maintains systems to evaluate and utilize information collected; acts as a liaison between the Sheriff's Department and to other elements of the Criminal Justice System including the District Attorney's Office, the courts and other police agencies to ensure accurate and timely processing of criminal papers and complaints; serves as a trainer and primary resource person for Sheriff's Deputies and other police officers in specialized areas requiring advanced job knowledge such as juvenile matters, vice and drug investigations, obtaining and executing search and arrest warrants, business crimes, etc.; performs detailed crime scene investigations including collecting fluid samples, detailed photography, collection and preservation of physical evidence, etc.; perform complex film processing and developing and other complex crime scene processing tasks; may direct other deputies as temporarily or regularly assigned, performs other duties of a Deputy Sheriff I-II as assigned.

**Education, Experience & Special Requirements**:
Education and Experience:
Education: Applicants must have earned sixty college credits from an accredited college or university or a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification.

Experience**:Applicants must have two years of continuous employment as a Dane County Deputy Sheriff.**

Special Requirements:

- Applicants must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a good driving record. Applicants must maintain the same state and agency performance requirements and proficiencies of other sworn personnel.

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of criminal investigation and information collection techniques; knowledge of department rules and regulations; knowledge of the laws of arrest, rules of evidence and court procedures; knowledge of the rights of those accused of crimes; knowledge of business practices including accounting techniques; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to plan and organize, knowledge of agencies involved in related work; ability to work with a minimum of assistance and supervision; ability to develop confidential relationships; ability to coordinate the work efforts of multi?jurisdictional agencies; ability to direct the work of others; ability to perform various field tests; ability to maintain and evaluate information; ability to present expert testimony in court; ability to instruct deputies and other law enforcement in related specialties; must have the ability to perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff I-II and continue to meet the standards required of this level. Must have attained Deputy Sheriff II status.
