Deputy Director, Institute for Global Health

The Deputy Director is a critical member of the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) leadership team is in charge of pursuing the IGHS mission and executing the organization’s goals purposes. They will report to the Executive Director of IGHS and have overall duty for administrative and mission-purpose of IGHS activities, both domestic and global. They also provide strategic advice on a range of issues affecting IGHS and UCSF’s global operations, including program priorities, areas of future investment, partnerships with UCSF Schools and Departments, partnerships with external organizations, recruitment of high-profile faculty and staff management team, and the implications of critical trends in the global health landscape for IGHS and UCSF. This is a multifaceted position that requires reasoning and management skills, a high degree of independence, and diplomatic skills appropriate to the duties of the senior administrative officer. The IGHS Deputy Director must have deep knowledge of global health, have exceptional communication skills, and can have informed dialogue with key stakeholders to engender a sense of trust and expertise. The Deputy Director will play a key role in helping IGHS achieve its aspirations for significant growth. The Deputy Director represents and serves as a proxy in the absence of the Executive Director, and makes choices that impact the direction, focus, and performance of the Institute. The Deputy Director must possess exceptional skills in effectively communicating messages, strategic visions, and/or campaigns to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders by crafting compelling visuals and presentations. They must demonstrate outstanding presentation skills, crucial for representing the leadership role within IGHS. This entails confidently articulating a visionary perspective to diverse stakeholders. Furthermore, they should take initiative in crafting clear, accessible content and conceptualizing visuals that effectively convey IGHS's goals. Creativity and partnership are essential components of position.
- The Deputy Director is involved in all aspects of IGHS affairs and activities and plays a leadership role with several major strategic initiatives including:
- The development and execution of new sponsored programs in assistance of IGHS mission. A major initiative will be focused on addressing and reducing the current fragmentation of global health-focused programs, units and Centers across UCSF, integrating them under IGHS. Recent efforts have led to the development of new research units and teams. Some examples include work in maternal and child health and primary health care systems in low-income countries; expansion of tuberculosis research activities; integration of climate change and health equity, global cancer program, among other programs, within IGHS.
- The exploration and development of new cross campus partnerships. Recent efforts have led to the development of the Center for Global Nursing, a cross alliance between IGHS, School of Nursing and UCSF Health. Partnership development will seek to leverage IGHS research, training and operational infrastructure, as well as ongoing activities and partnerships across 50 countries.
- The exploration of intercampus partnerships between UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford, and UCSF that may evolve into new joint research and training initiatives.
- The Deputy Director oversees and maintains smooth operations of a global enterprise that employs over 370 employees and operates Global Programs for Research and Training Offices in six countries. They will also oversee the operations of Finance and Research Services of IGHS. Where opportunities for improved operations are identified, the Deputy Director will work closely with the Director of Finance & Administration to develop and execute performance improvement initiatives in operations all-encompassing of appropriate monitoring of metrics.
The Deputy Director, in partnership with the Executive Director, oversees the functioning of the Director’s Executive Team (DET), charged with providing advisory input and facilitating assessment on IGHS activities and programs. The DET is comprised of IGHS staff, faculty as well as ex oficio members from UCSF’s relevant central operational units, as needed. The Deputy Director will also assist the development and functioning of an IGHS Leadership Council, which will be composed of trailblazers from industry, research, and philanthropy. Their task will focus on identifying and donating philanthropic opportunities within IGHS global health programs. The Deputy Director will spearhead the development of a charter for the Leadership Council describing ideas of fundraising goals and strategic guidance, for the IGHS mission.For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
