Washington, United States Public Citizen Full time

Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with more than 500,000 members and supporters. We hold the government and corporations accountable with campaigns and advocacy before Congress, administrative agencies, and the courts on issues including money in politics, open government, financial regulation, energy and the climate crisis, fair trade, consumer protection, access to justice, tax policy, workplace safety, drug and medical device safety, and healthcare. We are the reason there are air bags in cars and there were no red M&Ms for a decade. And much more.

**GENERAL DESCRIPTION**: Public Citizen’s Climate Program is seeking an experienced and committed campaigner to hold automakers accountable for their role in the climate crisis and to advocate for a rapid transition from gas-powered vehicles to clean transportation. The role focuses on corporate accountability and will also involve public policy.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Serve as the lead campaigner on Public Citizen’s Toyota campaign. Develop and execute a corporate campaign strategy to advocate for a rapid transition from gas-powered vehicles to clean transportation.
- Collaborate closely with Climate Program colleagues and partners to develop strategies and tactics for Public Citizen and allied organizations to pursue to advance our campaign goals. This includes working closely with colleagues advancing our auto supply chain and zero-emission vehicle policy and campaign goals to ensure cohesive and complimentary campaign strategies.
- Provide strategic direction, support, and opportunities for partners to engage and amplify the campaign demands.
- Organize grassroots activists, shareholders, and other stakeholders to advance campaign goals.
- Identify and create opportunities to increase pressure on Toyota through creative tactics such as ad campaigns, digital strategies, direct actions, and disrupting trade shows and Toyota-sponsored events.
- Identify opportunities to message or engage in actions around trade shows, sponsored events, etc., and plan and execute our activities.
- Advocate for the decarbonization of the transportation sector through state and federal policy and rulemaking via petition deliveries, grassroots comments, coalition comments, sign-on letters, and other grassroots efforts.
- Support and drive coalition efforts to hold other automakers, auto associations, and heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers responsible for lobbying to weaken and delay strong emissions standards, including generating grassroots, coalition, and industry support for clean car and trucks standards in key states.
- Develop materials such as talking points, corporate analyses, blogs, opinion media, and other written products as needed.
- Serve as the spokesperson for the campaign.
- Support other campaigns and projects as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.
- Some travel required.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- At least 3 years of relevant campaign experience, ideally in a public interest setting. Corporate campaign experience a plus.
- Commitment to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion in campaign planning, strategies, tactics, and execution.
- Demonstrated online and offline organizing experience, including social media and digital campaigns.
- Strong commitment to campaigning to force the auto manufacturers to rapidly phase out gas-powered vehicles and expand access to clean vehicles.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with public speaking experience and experience producing fact sheets, talking points, and analyses within a campaign setting.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, respond to short-term deadlines, balance multiple responsibilities, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

**SALARY AND BENEFITS**: Competitive salary and benefit package. This is a grant-contingent position. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).
