**Job Overview**:
The Assistant City Planner is a member of a team responsible for the development and growth of the City of New Haven. As an entry level position, they would be responsible for assisting the Director of Planning in administering and enforcing the City’s codes through the use of our Comprehensive Plan & Unified Development Ordinance.

**Essential Functions**:

- Assists with the review of development projects and site plans for compliance with City, State, and Federal codes and guidelines.
- Coordinates with community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in citywide projects.
- Assists in field inspections of projects in varying stages of construction.
- Will act as the primary contact with the public, providing customer service in answering and directing their questions and concerns.
- Collect and compile statistical data for the use in daily and year end reports
- Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and expansion of various software & data programs.

**Other Duties**
- Serve as staff to the New Haven Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and other Boards as assigned. This includes attending regularly scheduled meetings and assisting with presentations.
- Assists in coordinating with all City departments, the outside public, government agencies, and business organizations.
- Assists in compiling data & charts for representation of statistical information
- Assist in record keeping of public hearings and general planning projects
- Responsible for the archiving and digitalization of historic records
- Assist in preparing updates to the City’s Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Ordinance
- Performs other related/nonrelated duties as required by the Planning Director

**Qualifications**:

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning
- Knowledge of typical zoning and subdivision regulations
- Knowledgeable of effective writing techniques for memos and staff reports
- Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which include ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Laserfiche, Laredo, etc.
- Must have discretionary skills at providing public information, while maintaining confidential information.
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and verbally, with staff, elected officials, and the public

**Educational Requirements**:

- Degrees preferable to the tasks of this position are degrees in Planning, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Political Science, Public Administration, Civil Site Design or related field.

**Physical Demands**:

- Works in a position which is determined to be of light physical requirements.

**Work Environment**:

- Required to perform duties both inside and outside. Outdoor duties include data collection and field verifications.

**Experience**:

- Familiarity with Local Government operations (preferred)
- General experience in related fields

**Schedule**:

- 40 Hour Work Week
- 8-hour shift
- Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8 A.M. till 5 P.M. with an hour for lunch.
- Possible evening meetings as required.

Pay: $46,401.18 - $56,511.89 per year
