**Job Summary**

Registered Nurses in the Cancer Center Clinics department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adult patients with a variety of Ambulatory (medical surgical, critical care, emergent, perioperative) needs. Patient conditions include: benign and malignant hematologic and solid tumor diagnoses, seen within a variety of subspecialties (Hematology and Medical Oncology, Gynecology Oncology, Pulmonary Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Oncology, Urology). Patients may have a variety of medical and surgical needs. This position will include case managing a wide-range of oncology patients, duties to include but not limited to patient and family education, symptom management and telephone triage. Duties may include, but are not limited to, telephone triage; symptom management; triage for walk-in patients; patient and family education; reviewing and responding to patient results; reviewing and responding to patient communications; and coordination of care/treatment.

The Per Diem Nurse identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- At least one (1) year paid RN in-patient oncology experience
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS CPR or UCDH-issued CPR Certification
- Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Knowledge of current trends in nursing.

- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.
- Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner.
- Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.
- Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice.

- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) Certification or Ambulatory Care Nursing (RN-BC) Certification

**Department Description**

The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center provides medical and surgical oncology specialty and subspecialty care to cancer patients starting with diagnosis and extending through, treatment, surveillance, and survivorship. The nurse navigator uses the nursing process to offer individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome barriers to care to facilitate timely access to quality healthcare and promote successful outcomes. The nurse navigator serves as a patient advocate, empowering informed decision making. The incumbent provides education and a comprehensive review of the plan of care to patients and caregivers in conjunction with the clinical team of registered nurses, advanced practitioners, and physicians. The nurse navigator will exhibit strong skills in clinical oncology, communication, critical thinking, and leadership; and have or acquire knowledge of financial hardships, payor systems, and organization and community resources. This position involves a high level of autonomy as well as the ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams across various settings and providers.
