**Firefighter**:

- Respond to fire alarms with assigned company; lay and connect hose; maintain pumping apparatus; hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; ventilate burning structures; enter buildings to evacuate occupants.
- Operate all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment.
- Preserve evidence at fire scenes.
- Perform search and rescue of individuals in hazardous environments including collapsed buildings, auto accidents, hazardous material spills and confined spaces.
- Attend special instruction in firefighting emergency medical techniques; perform drills with other engine company staff; become familiar with city layout, established response routes and hydrant system; prepare and maintain a variety of firefighting preplan drawings and schematics.
- Firefighter/Paramedic employees assist in the training of fire department personnel in emergency medical techniques and medical field activities; maintain inventory of drugs and controlled substances.

**EMT-B**
- To properly assess and transport patients with medical emergencies and injuries; administer the appropriate basic life support to patients as authorized by the Emergency Medical System Project Medical Director or his/her delegated authority.
- Operates an emergency medical vehicle.
- Lifts, carries, and transports injured, sick or incapacitated persons from residential or accident scenes to medical facilities.
- Provides emergency medical treatment to injured, sick, or incapacitated persons.
- Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding treatment and to arrange for reception of victims at medical treatment facilities.
- Obtains information from persons involved, examines victims and determines nature, extent, or magnitude of illness or injury to establish emergency medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
- Administers prescribed first-aid treatment at sites of emergency or in specially equipped vehicles according to established medical protocols.
- Applies splints; administers oxygen or artificial resuscitation; treats and bandages wounds or abrasions; and performs other basic life support procedures.
- Stabilizes, immobilizes, lifts and moves victims from scene of accident or catastrophe.
- Operates a specially equipped emergency medical vehicle in an assigned geographic area to respond to accidents or catastrophes and to transport injured or ill persons to a medical facility.
- Inspects specially equipped emergency vehicle; cleans equipment to ensure its safe operation; and replenishes medical supplies, fuel, and fluids.

**REQUIREMENTS**:

- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Current/Valid Illinois Driver’s License of proper classification
- Successful completion of an EMT-B program and maintain a current/valid Illinois Department of Public Health EMT License
- Capable of completing continuing education and testing requirements in the system that you are assigned
- State of Illinois Firefighter Certifications (for Firefighter applicants)
- Successful completion of a professional and criminal background check
- Successful completion of a motor vehicle license check
- Successfully pass pre-employment testing including a Fit for Duty Physical, Drug Screening, Agility and Lifting Evaluation

**PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS (but not required)**:

- ACLS
- PALS/PEPP
- PHTLS/ BTLS/ITLS
- CPR Instructor
