**Under general supervision, performs professional accounting functions in the preparation and maintenance of the Agency's and related Joint Powers Authority's (JPA) financial records, reports and statements; oversees grant reimbursement billing and financial reporting; oversees payroll processing; and performs related duties as assigned.**

**DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS**:
**Accountant I is the entry-level class. Initially under direct supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of routine to moderately complex duties in the preparation of accurate and timely accounting and financial records. This class is alternately staffed with Accountant II, and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency that meet the qualifications for the higher-level class.**

Employees in this class may report to a Principal Accountant, Manager of Grants, Deputy Manager of Grants or Accounting Supervisor.

**EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- Maintains accounting records of revenues, expenditures and special funds; prepares analyses, spreadsheets, schedules, journal entries and reconciliations to produce accurate financial reports and footnotes; monitors and prepares periodic reports on revenue funds; reviews accounting transactions prepared by other staff members; prepares monthly journal entries for inter-company charges; prepares bank deposits; on a daily basis, reviews bank transactions and updates general ledger with bank activity; monitors cash position; calculates tax withholdings; prepares tax filings and reviews for accuracy and completeness; and prepares tax remittances.
- Reviews and validates billing reports from departments and JPAs and generates billing invoices; creates sales orders and ensures billings comply with contracts and agreements; monitors aging reports and performs appropriate collection activities.
