**Description**:
The position is based at the Main Library and will conduct field work, meetings, and public programs within RPL locations and throughout the city. A CMF helps to access a diverse and wide interpretation of public history.

**Duties include but are not limited to**:

- Supports the Richmond Room as a primary starting point for historical research on the City of Richmond
- Promotes use of the Memory Lab and Personal Archiving Kits through outreach and public programs outside of the libraries
- Promotes use of and contributions to RPL’s Special Collections
- Produces public programs that engage the community on a wide-variety of local history topics and themes
- Develops an oral history collaborative strategy to preserve Richmond voices
- Develops and maintains relationships with other institutions, organizations, and individuals who do public history work

**Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses**:
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:

- Broad knowledge of Richmond’s history, including people, places, and things, including documented and not-yet-documented history
- Knowledge of the local aspects or manifestations of larger historical forces (Civil Rights, Civil War, Urban Renewal, Reconstruction, etc.)
- Understanding of the local public history landscape, including organizations, individuals, past and current projects, and trends
- Awareness of trends and best practices in historical scholarship
- Using discretion to determine appropriate space, resources, and other amenities that are appropriate for each program
- Writing grants and reports as needed
- Oral and written communication
- Oral history recording technology
- Strong literacy and digital literacy skills
- Digitization skills, working with scanners and similar technology
- Be creative
- Make decisions
- Self-motivated, able to imagine a project or outcome and work to realize it
- Speak publicly

**MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Past or current participation in public history work
- Experience conducting and cataloging oral histories
- Exhibit preparation and public presentations such as lectures and/or workshops
- Potential CMFs should reside or have a long history of residence in the City of Richmond
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

**PREFFERED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Educational background in history or related field (undergraduate or graduate degree)
- Training in preservation or collections management
- Past work experience at a public history institution or organization such as a museum, historical society, public library, and/or archive, etc.
