JOB DUTIES

The Dog Kennel Manager serves as a team leader who is not only responsible for the overall wellness, behavior and training of the canines under the protection of RBARI, but also the supervision, training, scheduling, and support of the dog kennel department staff. This includes but is not limited to: management of kennel space, evaluation of each dog and protocols for difficult to handle or special cases, evaluation of possible foster homes; establishing the criteria for the adoptive home of each canine, and supervising the post-adoption calls/issues. In addition, the Dog Kennel Manager is responsible for: monitoring the safety and sanitation of the kennel, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates all kennel attendants, managing intake, and assisting the Veterinary Liaison and veterinarian during exams and visits.

New hires enter into a training/transition period for this position, and the responsibilities associated with it will be progressive where the new hire will be in direct supervision and shadow/train with our current Kennel Management team. Core responsibilities of the role will be given and assigned throughout the training period where the new hire will work in conjunction with our management team to learn our policies, procedures, and operations in our dog kennel. After the training period has been successfully completed, the new hire will be independently given additional tasks until the full scope of the role has been assigned/transferred.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reports to the Operations Manager, Executive Director, and the Veterinary Liaison
- Works and manages along side the Assistant Dog Kennel Manager to ensure the smooth operations of the dog kennel
- Conduct daily rounds, identifying and addressing any behavioral concerns, and reporting any medical concerns to the Veterinary Liaison
- Ensure that animal quarters and facility are kept cleaned, disinfected and maintained per established protocols
- Assist with cleaning, feeding and animal care treatments as needed
- Assist Operations Manager in establishing protocols as well as kennel assignments for main kennel, extra rooms and non-iso outside runs
- Responsible for supervision, training, scheduling and performance appraisals of kennel attendants
- Train and assist kennel attendants in the safe handling techniques of animals and cleaning agents
- Manages dog to dog as well as cat to dog meets and temperament tests as needed
- Facilitate routine department staff meetings and communications
- Manages surrender form approvals and performs assessments on new dogs for intake according to our intake guidelines
- Ensures department staff are professional at all times and work with Operations Manager and executive Director to de-escalate any staff concerns or conflicts
- Provides weekly reports on dog kennel status, including any canine behavior and staff issues; developing long-range plans for the department and animals
- Submits monthly kennel status reports, intake and adoption numbers to the Rescue Partnership Coordinator/Veterinary Liaison, Operations Manager, and Executive Director
- Serves as a voting member of the Animal Health & Welfare Committee (for dogs/puppies)
- Enforces all state required guidelines, and follows intake targets and procedures
- Performs direct care, including but not limited to, vaccinations, microchipping, fecal tests, deworming, wound checks, ear cleanings, nail trims, check for fleas and ticks, flea baths, monitoring temps and administering medications
- Reports any illness, injury, or medical concern to the Veterinary Liaison and/or vets
- Ensures dogs/puppies obtain emergency medical care as needed
- Ensures a 100% spay / neuter compliance for adopted dogs/puppies
- Follows protocol for the isolation rooms
- Ensures all PPE procedures are followed
- Maintains inventory of food and supplies and submits list of items to be ordered on a weekly basis to the Operations Manager
- Supervises cleaning and feeding schedules
- Ensures cleanliness and functionality of equipment/supplies
- Manages schedules for the kennel staff to ensure appropriate coverage and specific handling needs of the dogs are met each day
- Ensures staff are sticking to their assigned schedules and not arriving before or staying past their shift without approval
- Trains animal attendants in the safe use of cleaning agents
- Ensures a positive customer experience for all visitors
- Ensures a professional and positive work environment for all employees and volunteers
- Ensures a high-quality experience for all potential adopters and visitors
- Provides prompt, courteous and appropriate responses to inquiries
- Guarantees high quality services are offered in accordance with RBARI policies and procedures
- Works to reduce departmental costs through donations and cost management
