Counsel, Litigation & Compliance

Chicago, IL

LHH is conducting an exclusive search for a Counsel, Litigation & Compliance for Ryerson, a leading publicly traded metals processor and distributor. Reporting directly to the General Counsel – North America & Chief Compliance Officer, this attorney will support litigation, employment, compliance, insurance, and risk management matters across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage litigation, claims, investigations, and dispute resolution matters across North America.
  • Partner with the General Counsel on litigation strategy, settlement decisions, and risk assessments.
  • Oversee insurance-related matters, including claims management, carrier communications, coverage issues, and policy renewals.
  • Advise Human Resources and business leaders on employment matters, including employee relations, workplace investigations, discipline, terminations, and policy interpretation.
  • Support compliance initiatives involving data privacy, cybersecurity, and government contracting requirements.
  • Advise on risk, liability, and compliance issues arising from acquisitions, contracts, leases, and vendor agreements.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and provide practical guidance to internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • J.D. and active bar membership.
  • 3+ years of legal experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of both.
  • Experience managing litigation and dispute resolution matters.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide practical legal advice in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Experience with employment law, insurance, compliance, data privacy, cybersecurity, or government contracting is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary of approximately $170,000–$200,000, plus bonus.

Chicago, IL. Hybrid work arrangement.

This role is well suited for an attorney who enjoys a broad practice and wants to grow beyond commercial litigation or labor and employment. This role reports directly to the General Counsel, who came to Ryerson as a Senior Counsel and is looking to mentor towards long-term growth within the organization’s collegial and tenured legal department.
