About the Office of Experiential Education
The objective of the Office of Experiential Education is to ensurea quality program for each School of Pharmacy student’s fulfillmentof all experiential education curricular requirements throughoutthe four-year program.
Key Responsibilities
Program Administration
The Director of ExperientialEducation provides overall administrative leadership and strategicoversight for the School’s experiential education programs,ensuring alignment with ACPE standards, School educationaloutcomes, and PharmD program requirements. This includesimplementing current program objectives, policies, procedures, andoperations as well as long-range planning and budgeting. TheDirector oversees experiential education course coordinationincluding student scheduling and assignments, communication ofexpectations to students, and managing affiliation agreements withsites. This role represents experiential education within Schoolcommittees and institutional activities including serving on theExecutive Committee, PharmD Curriculum Committee, AcademicPerformance Committee, Outcomes & Assessment Committee, and theStudent Executive Council.
Quality Assurance
The Director of Experiential Educationoversees the quality assurance processes for experiential educationto ensure compliance with established policies, procedures,accreditation standards, affiliation agreements, and expectationsfor practice sites and preceptors. This includes conducting routinesite visits; evaluating preceptor, student, and experiential siteexperiences; monitoring program outcomes and feedback; andidentifying opportunities to improve and streamline processes whilemaintaining or enhancing program quality. The role also engages arepresentative preceptor advisory group to provide ongoing inputregarding practice environments, program support, and emergingneeds.
Preceptor Engagement
The Director of Experiential Educationmaintains strong, collaborative relationships with experientialsites and preceptors across Virginia and the District of Columbiato support high-quality and sustainable experiential educationopportunities. Responsibilities include identifying and recruitingnew sites and preceptors; overseeing the onboarding, training, anddevelopment of preceptors and maintaining regular communicationregarding program goals, objectives, expectations, and changesaffecting experiential education. The Director providesindividualized consultation to preceptors regarding challengingstudent situations, facilitates resolution of concerns, conductssite visits, provides feedback and recognition, and identifiesopportunities to strengthen preceptor knowledge, skills, andengagement.
Staff Supervision
The Director of Experiential Educationoversees the Office of Experiential Education through the directand indirect supervision of two support staff. Routine tasks andduties are delegated in accord with University policy andguidelines.
Teaching Responsibilities
The position serves as a lecturerwithin the Continuous Professional Development course seriesoffered in each of the Pharm.
