FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention cultivates a safer city for its citizens, visitors and first responders by preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and other emergencies. We accomplish this 24/7 by identifying fire and life safety hazards; creating, revising, and enforcing the New York City Fire Code; reviewing plans for critical systems designed to protect and alert building occupants; licensing qualified companies to install and service fire protection equipment and systems; certifying individuals to monitor fire safety conditions; and educating individuals and businesses about fire safety. In addition, the Bureau of Fire Prevention is critical partner with the Bureau of Fire Operations (Firefighters) and Bureau of Fire Investigations (Fire Marshals), providing assistance and guidance during post-fire incidents and investigations; and coordinating with other City agencies on matters concerning fire and life safety. The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers work together to save lives in New York City.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention is seeking a highly talented Fire Protection Inspector, Level II to serve in the Management Support Unit. Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Inspector of the Management Support Unit, the selected candidate will perform duties including but not limited to the following:
Oversee all Preventative Maintenance (PM) related services for the bureau's fleet of vehicles which includes tracking and coordinating appointments, ensuring drivers keep scheduled appointments to ensure durability and longevity of automobiles.
Oversee the bureau's inventory of radios by tracking each unit's radio assignments and utilization, retain concise records for each instrument by unit, and oversee all maintenance related matters.
Responsible for tracking, monitoring and resolving all parking related violations.
Assist the Deputy Chief Inspector with all special projects and impromptu incidents as requested.
Conduct special inspections as directed.
Provide exceptional customer service when responding to all staff inquiries.
Ensure all Inspectors are adequately provided Class A and work duty related regalia upon promotion.
Serve as the Quarter Master liaison to schedule and coordinate promotional uniform exchanges.
Responsible for ordering staff business cards and following up on orders to ensure timely delivery.
Prepare correspondence to all unit heads to ensure timesheets are submitted in a timely fashion.
Assist the Deputy Director of BFP HR with special events as needed.
Perform related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Five (5) years of full-time experience in or more of the following:
a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or housed to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York.
Preferred Skills
Knowledge of the Fire Code, Rules of the City of New York, the NYC Building Code, Multiple Dwelling Code, NFPA standards related to the Fire Code. Knowledge of inspection procedures relative to FDNY Summonses, and Violation Orders, Excellent analytical and research skills excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to multi-task with excellent time management skills. Must be computer literate with experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite. At least two (2) years serving as a permanent level-one AFPI.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
