Job SummaryThe Lecturer of Music & Assistant Director of University Bands is a full-time, 12-month faculty position in the Fine Arts, Humanities & Wellness department, playing a crucial role in the development and success of our bands ( marching, concert, and pep), and instrumental ensembles. This multifaceted role involves assisting the Band Director in conducting various bands, teaching music education courses and applied lessons, curriculum assessment & development, recruitment, and other related activities. The Assistant Director will also closely collaborate with students, helping them enhance their musical skills, fostering a positive band culture, and contributing to the overall growth of our university's band and the Visual and Performing Arts Program.
Responsibilities- Collaborate in the development and implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts program's music curriculum, goals, and objectives.
- Work closely with the Director of University Bands and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program coordinator to plan and conduct hearings, juries, rehearsals, performances, and events.
- Provide valuable instruction and guidance to the BFA degree program majors and band members, focusing on improving their musical abilities and ensemble skills.
- Assist in instrument maintenance and manage inventory.
- Support student recruitment and retention efforts.
- Cultivate an inclusive and positive band culture, promoting teamwork, discipline, and artistic expression.
- Assist the Director of Bands in coordinating band trips and performances.
- Assist the Department Chair/Program Coordinator in coordinating the applied instruction and accompaniment.
- Perform assigned administrative tasks related to the band program.
- May be required to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description.
Educational Requirements:
- Master's degree in Music, Music Education, Conducting, or a closely related field.
Professional Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience in band instruction or conducting at the collegiate or secondary level.
- Proficiency in directing large and small ensemble groups, with demonstrated experience in marching band, concert band, and/or jazz ensemble.
Commitment to Student Success:
- Evidence of effective teaching at the college or high school level, with a commitment to student-centered learning.
- Ability to mentor and advise students both academically and professionally.
Professionalism:
- Demonstrated commitment to upholding professional standards, ethics, and conduct, especially in a leadership and mentorship role.
The proposed salary range is $60,000.00 to $72,000.00 annually.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities- Strong conducting and rehearsal techniques, with the ability to effectively communicate musical concepts.
- Familiarity with band literature across genres and periods, including contemporary and traditional works.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills to interact with students, faculty, and staff.
- Proficiency in instrumental pedagogy, with the ability to support students' technical and musical development.
- Experience in arranging music for bands or ensemble groups.
- Ability to contribute to department service needs, such as recruitment, community engagement, and program development.
- Demonstrated involvement in professional organizations and a record of continued professional growth.
