Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Camp Counselor is responsible for working directly with children. The Camp Counselor plays an integral role in the development of building strong character values in youth.

Staff at all times is representative of the philosophy, mission, and goal of McHenry Parks & Recreation Department and its camp program. Staff must strive to work cooperatively with the Recreation Supervisor and fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of McHenry Parks & Recreation Department.
Job Duties

DECISION MAKING AND JUDGEMENT
  • Responsible for providing diverse program experiences for assigned group during camp
  • Be responsible for maintaining discipline in assigned group, as well as other campers as needed
  • Be prepared to discuss with parent any experience a child has at camp
ADMINISTRATIVE
  • Prepare and administer activities according to schedules
  • Be available for staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
  • Report any incidents to the Superintendent of Recreation and fill out any necessary paperwork
  • Notifying Superintendent of Recreation of any broken or malfunctioning equipment immediately
  • Overall responsibility for maintaining all records
SUPERVISION
  • Responsible for assigned group of 10-15 campers ages 6-12 and will be responsible for the group at all times while in the care of McHenry Parks & Recreation
  • Keep accurate count of children in your group at all times
  • Responsible for selecting, instructing, directing, and supervising the flow of work
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess strong oral and interpersonal communication skills; must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with superiors, co-workers and children
  • Must be physically able to lift a child (if necessary); must be able to lift 50 pounds; requires frequent heavy lifting and moving of equipment and supplies
  • Must be able to evaluate situations and make decisions within established policies and standards
  • Must be able to participate in activities
  • Must have knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations; must be trained and certified in First Aid, CPR and AED
  • Must be energetic, outgoing, and interested in being a positive role model to young children
  • Must possess ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environment
  • Must possess creativity, initiative, and willingness to learn and implement new ideas
  • Must possess motivation to be trained in "best practices" of youth development and childcare profession
ACCURACY
  • Requires accurate record keeping for programs
PARTICIPANT SAFETY
  • Review and understand all emergency drills and be prepared to implement them
  • Be available to cover a group of children as needed in case of staff shortage
  • Requires considerable attention and alertness to safety hazards
  • Must be able to take on a leadership role in matters of safety
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES
  • Fill in at various positions when there are personnel shortages, vacations, or special projects (including opening/closing as needed)
  • Other related duties as assigned and perform all duties with honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility
  • Maintains all necessary records
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures
Qualifications
  • Must be 17 years of age or older
  • Basic First Aid, CPR and AED certification current or obtained as soon as possible
  • Desire to work with children on a daily basis
  • Must be an example of good moral behavior
    • Minimum of 3 months working and/or volunteering with children ages 6 - 14
    • Prefer one or more years of college in a related field (i.e. recreation, child development, psychology, etc.)
      • Willingness to project McHenry Parks & Recreation image by personal adherence to all policies
      • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and administer all policies, established by McHenry Parks & Recreation, to all employees and volunteers you may come in contact with
      • Must be able to positively interact with children on a daily basis
      • Must be able to take constructive criticism
      • Must be able to get to work on a daily basis
