Hiring Range(hourly): $25.61/min - $28.18/mid - $30.74/max

Position Summary: Performs a variety of activities involved in the implementation of the Parks and Open Space Department focusing on horticultural, floricultural, and community gardens programs consistent with the organization's values and mission statement.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Field Supervisor (Horticulture/Parks Maintenance).

Essential Job Functions:

Horticulture
* Maintains landscape installations, cultivates, and propagates exotic and native plant species that are landscape or exhibit specific.
* Provides the proper maintenance of the annual and perennial flower beds.
* Oversees rain gardens, street bulb-outs, and bio retention ponds with regards to horticultural aspect.
* Assists with inventories and maintains all documents for the floral program.
* Leads and coordinates the daily operations of the floral crew while independently working on other projects as needed.
* Assists with the fertilizer program and a maintenance program for the control of plant diseases and insects.
* Professionally communicates with citizens when approached and assists them appropriately.
* Communicates clear instructions to the floral crew of safety protocols, proper maintenance of plants and completion of all tasks.
Supervision
* Executes leadership and supervision responsibilities through sound judgment, focusing on quality improvement, and managing and resolving conflict.
* Fosters a culture of accountability and defines responsibilities and expectations by setting goals.
* Responsible for/assists with hiring and training of all seasonal, temporary and/or intermittent personnel.
* Provides motivation, recognition, and feedback through performance appraisals, professional training and encouraging career development.
* Supervises, plans, coordinates, and schedules daily activities of regular full time and temporary staff to ensure coverage for departmental needs. Provides employee staffing for special events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: One to three years of experience in horticulture.
Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient in the following areas: Microsoft Outlook Email, and a basic understanding of computers and online computer-based technology applications, which includes accessing web based platforms.

Licenses & Certifications:
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

Preferred Candidate: Has completed a two year accredited horticultural associates degree program and/or is fluent in Spanish.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.
Position Type and Work Hours:
* Regular full time, hours may vary with workload.
* Evenings/Weekends/Holidays may be required depending on department needs and special projects.
Work Environment:
* Indoors: Office environment.
* Outdoors/Off-Site: Work is performed in a variety of environments both indoors and outdoors, and involves exposure to a variety of weather conditions and temperatures. Meetings, trainings, and site visits at a variety of city facilities and areas.

Physical Activities:

* Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
* Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
* Communicating with others to exchange information.
* Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
* Operating machinery and/or power tools.
* Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
* Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
* Environmental Conditions include low and high temperatures, outdoor elements of precipitation and wind, noisy environments.
* Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like.
* Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.

Frequency Occasional:
* Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds.
* Heavy work that includes moving objects up to 100 pounds or more.
