The Fitness Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with City of McHenry policies and procedures.
Wage depends on qualifications.
Job Duties
Essential Job Functions
- Plan appropriate aerobic activity.
- Attend regular fitness meetings.
- Be present at least 10 minutes before the starting time of each class.
- Record class attendance.
- If unable to teach an assigned class, secure a substitute instructor who has been approved by the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Check supplies and equipment for wear and tear and advise if supplies or equipment need repair or replacement.
- Enforces proper cleaning by participants for fitness equipment used during class.
- Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality and genuine awareness.
- Instructor must be present and accountable for participant's safety and action while the program is in session.
- Allow enough time before and after each program for set-up and clean-up.
- Provides excellent customer service to all patrons. Maintain a professional, diplomatic, and friendly relationship with patrons.
- Promptly greet participants in a pleasant and friendly manner.
- Follows all safety guidelines while using City of McHenry facilities.
- Administer first aid when absolutely necessary.
- Ensures adherence to safety and injury prevention policies and procedures; prepares accident reports as required.
- Keep an open line of communication with the Recreation Center Manager on the progress of the program and any obstacles that might arise.
- Perform the job safely and in compliance with City of McHenry policies, procedures, work and safety rules and the employee manual.
- Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the District and the customer.

- Maintains a working knowledge of all general City of McHenry and Parks & Recreation Department safety rules.
- Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
- Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
- Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
- Must exhibit good problem solving ability and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Must resolve problems as they arise and be able to reprioritize as needed.
- Must be able to build positive relationships with the public, customers, internal supervisors and staff, and external vendors and providers to ensure smooth-running operations.
- Must maintain confidentiality on sensitive subjects and member information.
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping and lifting is required.
- Lifting is required, up to 50 lbs
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position.
- Employee general work area is indoors, in a smoke fee, with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting.
- Employee may be exposed to the potential of blood borne pathogens.
- Employee on a daily basis will be exposed to products used to sanitize equipment.
- Employee must have the able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Employee must possess time management and organizational skills to effectively perform his/her job.
- Employee must demonstrate good customer service skills with the ability to problem solve resident or participant complaints.
- Employee must have the ability to make judgments with respect to confidentiality of information and problem solving.
- Employee must show knowledge of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and wellness information.
- Must have the ability to work with adults and understand their needs.
- Be committed to working the length of the program.
- Must be experienced, self-motivated and responsible.
- Certification from a national, accredited organization in group exercise instruction is required.
- Certification from ACE or AFAA in group exercise instruction, or Yoga Alliance for yoga instruction, is preferred.
- At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes is preferred.
- Fitness Instructor must maintain certifications in CPR, AED and First Aid.
