The Fitness Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with City of McHenry policies and procedures.
Wage depends on qualifications.
Job Duties
Essential Job Functions

• Plan appropriate aerobic activity.
  • Attend regular fitness meetings.
    • Be present at least 10 minutes before the starting time of each class.
      • Record class attendance.
        • If unable to teach an assigned class, secure a substitute instructor who has been approved by the Parks & Recreation Department.
          • Check supplies and equipment for wear and tear and advise if supplies or equipment need repair or replacement.
            • Enforces proper cleaning by participants for fitness equipment used during class.
              • Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality and genuine awareness.
                • Instructor must be present and accountable for participant's safety and action while the program is in session.
                  • Allow enough time before and after each program for set-up and clean-up.
                    • Provides excellent customer service to all patrons. Maintain a professional, diplomatic, and friendly relationship with patrons.
                    • Promptly greet participants in a pleasant and friendly manner.
                    • Follows all safety guidelines while using City of McHenry facilities.
                    • Administer first aid when absolutely necessary.
                    • Ensures adherence to safety and injury prevention policies and procedures; prepares accident reports as required.
                      • Keep an open line of communication with the Recreation Center Manager on the progress of the program and any obstacles that might arise.
                        • Perform the job safely and in compliance with City of McHenry policies, procedures, work and safety rules and the employee manual.
                          • Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the District and the customer.
                          SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
                          

1. Maintains a working knowledge of all general City of McHenry and Parks & Recreation Department safety rules.
2. Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
3. Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
4. Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
5. Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. Must exhibit good problem solving ability and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Parks & Recreation Department.
2. Must resolve problems as they arise and be able to reprioritize as needed.
3. Must be able to build positive relationships with the public, customers, internal supervisors and staff, and external vendors and providers to ensure smooth-running operations.
4. Must maintain confidentiality on sensitive subjects and member information.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. Frequent walking, standing, stooping and lifting is required.
2. Lifting is required, up to 50 lbs
3. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

1. Employee general work area is indoors, in a smoke fee, with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting.
2. Employee may be exposed to the potential of blood borne pathogens.
3. Employee on a daily basis will be exposed to products used to sanitize equipment.

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

1. Employee must have the able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
2. Employee must possess time management and organizational skills to effectively perform his/her job.
3. Employee must demonstrate good customer service skills with the ability to problem solve resident or participant complaints.
4. Employee must have the ability to make judgments with respect to confidentiality of information and problem solving.
5. Employee must show knowledge of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and wellness information.

Qualifications

• Must have the ability to work with adults and understand their needs.
• Be committed to working the length of the program.
• Must be experienced, self-motivated and responsible.
• Certification from a national, accredited organization in group exercise instruction is required.
• Certification from ACE or AFAA in group exercise instruction, or Yoga Alliance for yoga instruction, is preferred.
• At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes is preferred.
• Fitness Instructor must maintain certifications in CPR, AED and First Aid.
