Medical Laboratory Scientist

Sign On Bonus Eligible Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Microbiology department are essential in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases through routine and complex molecular, microbiological and immunological testing. MLS team members adhere to strict aseptic techniques, follow safety protocols, and ensure precise data entry and quality assurance. In addition to bench work, MLS professionals troubleshoot instruments, work on LEAN processes, and collaborate with providers and nurses to support patient care. As a core laboratory within the health system, the Microbiology team processes samples from multiple locations. Leveraging advanced technologies such as molecular testing and other high complexity test methods, the team utilizes LEAN principles to enhance efficiency and maintain excellence in microbiological/molecular diagnostics.GENERAL SUMMARY:Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on bloodand/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use oflaboratory instruments and information systems.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological,histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures onlaboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and informationsystems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treatment of disease. TheMedical Laboratory Scientist is qualified to perform duties described here, and, in agiven job situation may or may not perform all of the duties as actual duties willpertain to the specific assignment.2. Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take actionand/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processesand resolve problems, including:a) Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure theaccuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.b) Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states.c) Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologiccauses of unexpected test results.3. Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshootingof laboratory equipment, instruments and/or laboratory information systems.Following successful completion of competency testing may perform processing,testing, and reporting without direct supervision.4. Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures,including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental,and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.5. Participates in various quality assessment and improvement activities including,proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing andadhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees,and successfully completes regular competency assessments. Maintains thelaboratory and procedures in inspection ready condition.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:1. Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratorydiscipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical LaboratoryScientist listed on the ASCP website at (ascp.org); or possesses a categoricalscientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB; or has met the requirementsfor AAB and/or AMT certifications.2. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.3. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to performlaboratory functions are required.
