JOB DUTIES
SUMMARY BACKGROUND:
Are you a team focused, enthusiastic individual with a passion for animal care? We are looking for a goal-oriented individual to assist overseeing the daily operations of the animal shelter. This position will work directly with the Animal Services Manager in ensuring all of the shelter animals receive the best quality care and work as part of a team to maximize lifesaving.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assist the Animal Services Manager in ensuring that the animal care staff operates in a coordinated, efficient and effective manner via daily supervision and providing support as needed.
Assist the Animal Services Manager in ensuring high quality standards of animal care, handling, and sanitation and that staff performance is consistent with protocols.
Work collaboratively with the animal medical department to facilitate communication regarding animal health and care between appropriate person(s) and department(s).
Help to maintain a safe working environment by promoting safe animal handling and teaching appropriate techniques to new staff members.
Assist with keeping animal records current through review as necessary and basic computer data entry.
Assist in inventory control and ordering for the shelter and the medical department.
Responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of equipment used daily by staff.
Communicate issues or concerns with animals, staff, and facilities to the Animal Service Manager or appropriate member of the management team.
Perform humane euthanasia as necessary.
Engage with customers in a calm and professional manner at all times and circumstances.
Demonstrate strong knowledge of the animals in the shelter and have the ability to answer staff, volunteer, or customer questions about the animals as needed.
Demonstrate a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events.
Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to FRAS policies and procedures.
Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices.
Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal or the organization at risk.
Follow direction of the Animal Welfare Director and Animal Services Manager as well as the Veterinarian.

QUALIFICATIONS
This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
Extensive background checks required.
Associates degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.
Two (2) years of experience with animal welfare, animal behavior/training or veterinary services.
Two (2) years supervisory experience.
Animal care and customer service experience required.
Knowledge Skills Abilities should demonstrate practiced animal care.
Must be able to safely handle animals with an unknown temperament.
Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment; principles and procedures or record keeping.
Must be able to obtain Euthanasia Certification within six months of date of hire.
Strong communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with public and staff; principals and supervision and teambuilding.
Ability to receive money and make proper change.
Ability to cope emotionally with the euthanasia.
Ability to manage multiple situations simultaneously.
Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Commitment to mission, values, goals and success of the FRAS with compassion and genuine affection for animals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public.
Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Must be able to work around animals without an allergic reaction.
This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Animal capture equipment, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves and ropes to handle animals, chemical cleaning materials in shelter maintenance, including chlorine.
