Purpose of Position:

The Department of Political Science at Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Political Science, effective Fall 2025. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates.

The successful candidate will have broad theoretical and methodological training in political science with a teaching and research emphasis in American judicial politics and constitutional law. In addition to offering upper-level courses in their area of specialization, the successful candidates teaching responsibilities will include an introductory course in American politics, and upper-level courses on U.S. Constitutional law, civil rights, the judicial process, and the Supreme Court. Opportunities are available to collaborate with interdisciplinary programs in National Security Studies, Health Sciences, Education, Pre-Law, and Criminology, among others.

The nominal teaching load for restricted appointments is 4-4. The Ph.D. in Political Science or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Lecturer. ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.

Departmental Information:

The Department of Political Science is composed of 11 full-time faculty who seek to provide students an outstanding liberal arts education. The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, with majors in political science and international affairs, and minors in political science, human rights and conflict resolution, and US National Security Studies. Department faculty are dedicated teacher-scholars who emphasize high-quality classroom instruction informed by their research and professional activities. Faculty are also committed to providing students a variety of extra-curricular opportunities to add breadth and depth to the classroom experience, including involving students in faculty research projects, hosting speakers on campus, and operating three academic centers: the Center for American Studies, the Wason Center for Civic Leadership, and the Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution.
