Job Summary
Learn, Grow, and Make an Impact Give back to the community by helping maintain our city's award-winning softball complex, while facilitating a variety of programs and events ran annually by our Parks and Recreation Department.
You will gain valuable work experience in recreational sports, softball field maintenance, and customer service. This is a great summertime position for someone in college who needs a seasonal summer job with the opportunity to return the following season. The days and hours of work are flexible, so this position would be a good fit for someone who is looking to earn a supplemental income while working around an existing job. Oftentimes, employees return year after year as they advance in the position and develop leadership skills and experience for future careers.
What you will do: You will work outside at the Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex in West Salem to support the City's thriving Softball/Kickball programs. Work times will vary and may require you to work on weekends and holidays, depending on the area of assignment. This recruitment is for temporary positions limited to 1,200 hours per calendar year, however most of the work hours will be during April - September. The Seasonal Recreation I - III positions are a series of classification that include: Program Aide (I), Recreation Assistant (II), and Recreation Lead (III). Upon hire, you will be placed at the assigned level based on the job duties assigned to you and your knowledge, skills, and abilities toward fulfilling those duties.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
- All positions will assist recreation staff with the day-to-day operations of Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex and associated programs. These duties include, but are not limited to manual labor, sports field maintenance, custodial and clerical tasks.
- Main duties of Recreation Lead (III): position may perform lead work, direction, and/or supervision of less experienced staff, including evaluation of performance, training and guidance. Recreation leaders may perform other program coordination and development as well, such as meeting with sponsors, planning tournaments, determining staffing needs or working with the press.
- Experience working for a local government entity.
- Fast paced work outside in a park setting.
- Flexible schedule and a varying number of hours per week, dependent upon your availability. (Weekend availability is a requirement in most cases)

- Must be 16 years of age or older at time of hire.
- Depending on area of assignment, must have an Oregon Driver license or the ability to obtain an Oregon license within 30 days of residency and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards. Driving is not required for all areas of assignment, we encourage you to apply if you do not have a driver's license.
- Program Aide (I): For recreation assignments, one year or season of experience in recreation, education, sports, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and training working with youth and/or adults in a recreational setting.
- Recreation Assistant (II): One year or more of customer service or related seasonal experience demonstrating program support or coordination in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using specialized skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.
- Recreation Lead (III): Two years of or more of customer service or related experience demonstrating leadership roles in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using advanced or technical skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.
- Successful candidates should be highly organized, work effectively with others, follow oral and written direction, possess basic computer proficiency skills, and enjoy being part of a team.
- Experience in and/or a love of sports is ideal. Assignment to the various recreational programs will be based on the candidate's skills and level of experience.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
