POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION

Love working with children? Howard County Recreation & Parks is seeking active, engaging and responsible staff for preschool classes.

Responsibilities will include supervising children and planning curriculum as well as the daily operations and administrative responsibilities of the class.

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age.

Previous experience working with preschool children is preferred.

Classes follow the Howard County Public School calendar.

Salary: $16.00 - $30.00/hour depending on experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Preschool Teacher:
  1. Accept responsibility for the physical safety and emotional well-being of the children.
  2. Inspect all areas used by children on a daily basis for potentially hazardous conditions. Responsible for securing the building, playground equipment and supplies before leaving the building.
  3. Ensure proper staff and child ratio and assign staff duties. Ensure accurate attendance is maintained at ALL TIMES.
  4. Maintain the program behavioral guidelines.
  5. Communicate clearly and courteously with parents, children, program staff and school or park personnel.
  6. Responsibility to plan and produce weekly calendars and coordinate a well-rounded program of age-appropriate activities including: circle time, active play, music, arts and crafts, social activities and special events.
  7. Report accidents, property damage, or major disciplinary problems to the Children's Program Supervisor or Children's Program Coordinator as soon as possible.
  8. Inform staff of all activities scheduled for the program. Ensure staff members are clear about their responsibilities in implementing the program schedule.
  9. Assist in setting up and taking down equipment and cleaning up area daily. Maintain cleanliness of the program space, including picking up trash, sweeping floor daily, etc.
  10. Pick up snacks and supplies from the warehouse.
  11. Wear Howard County nametag at ALL times. Dress appropriately for taking an active role with children.
  12. Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, equipment, and snacks.
  13. Attend all training scheduled by the Children's Program Supervisor or Early Childhood Program Coordinator.
  14. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Children's Program Supervisor or Children's Program Coordinator.
Administrative Requirements:
  1. Ensure that emergency forms are complete and accessible for ALL children enrolled in the program.
  2. Prepare and submit lesson plans.
  3. Ensure that parents sign children in and out each day. Maintain accurate attendance sheet at all times.
  4. Verify staff hours and initial timecards. Turn in every other Thursday afternoon.
  5. Ensure all correspondence must be on Howard County letterhead and approved by the Children's Program Supervisor.
  6. Ensure that all accident/incident reports are accurate, complete, and turned into the Children's Program Supervisor within 24 hours. Any injury requiring professional medical attention must be forwarded to the Office of Risk Management within 24 hours.
  7. Document and notify Children's Program Supervisor with any concerns regarding staff or children.
  8. With prior approval of Children's Program Supervisor, purchase program supplies and materials. Maintain accurate financial records and turn in receipts bi-weekly.
Preschool Assistant:
1. Accept responsibility for the physical safety and emotional well-being of the children. Take responsibility for the program in the Director's absence.
2. Insure children are properly supervised and accurate attendance is maintained at all times.
3. Communicate clearly and courteously with parents, children, program staff and school or park personnel.
4. Assists in planning a well-rounded program of age-appropriate activities including: music, games, arts and crafts, circle time, active play, social activities and special events.
5. Report accidents, property damage, or major disciplinary problems to the Director.

2. Ensure that parents sign children in and out each day. Maintain accurate attendance sheet at all times.
3. Complete accident/incident reports are accurately and turn in to Director.
4. Document and notify Director with any concerns regarding staff or children.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Preschool Teacher:
  • Must be 21 years old and able to effectively meet the social, emotional and physical needs of preschool aged children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, peers and participants.
  • Knowledge of program curriculum.
  • Infant and Child CPR certification required by the beginning of the program.
  • Professional experience leading activities with children.
Preschool Assistant:
  • Must be 20 years old and able to effectively meet the social, emotional and physical needs of preschool aged children.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with parents, peers and participants.
  • Must have knowledge of preschool curriculum
  • Infant and Child CPR certification required by the beginning of the program.
  • Professional experience working with preschool children.
RATE OF PAY:

Preschool Teacher:
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Contingent -Paraprofessional
$16.00-$30.00/hour

Preschool Assistant:
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Contingent -Paraprofessional
$16.00 - $20.00/hour
