MEDICAL LAB SCIENTIST III, Point of Care

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead and coordinate laboratory operations, including workflow management and resource allocation.
  • Conduct quality control and assurance measures, implementing corrective actions as necessary to maintain high standards of accuracy and reliability.
  • Professionally collaborates with healthcare professionals to provide insights and interpretations of complex test results.
  • Conduct routine and specialized laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other bodily fluids.
  • Prepare and analyze samples using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety and quality control procedures.
  • Document and report test results in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to testing and equipment.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to maintain certification and enhance skills.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory workspace and equipment.
  • Support laboratory management in quality assurance and improvement initiatives.
  • Laboratory operations are conducted to ensure a safe working environment at all times.
  • Prioritize and manage workload to prevent delays and meet established turnaround time goals.
  • Competencies are maintained, and new skills are added as technologies change.
  • Inventory needs are communicated in a timely manner.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment according to policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in laboratory accreditation activities as assigned and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Routine and complex instrument maintenance is performed and documented according to departmental policy.
  • Evaluate and implement new testing methodologies and technologies to enhance laboratory efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for troubleshooting technical issues and resolving operational challenges.
  • Maintain detailed records of laboratory procedures, results, and quality assurance activities.
Point of Care (POC) Competencies:
  • Responsible for non-waived proficiency testing for the POC departments to include distribution, entry, reviews, and failure investigations.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory and hospital standards for POC testing to include, but not limited to, lot to lot parallel testing, instrument to instrument correlations, IQCP implementation and reviews and calibration verification.
  • Coordinates with nurse educators and leadership for the CLIA certificate of waiver testing
  • Subject matter expert and lab liaison for POC waived and non-waived testing
  • Collaborates with Clinical Engineering to ensure testing equipment is maintained.
  • Maintains proficiency with all applicable computer systems.
  • Maintains the personnel records for the POC departments to include copies of diplomas/transcripts, training documents and competency assessments.
  • Coordinates performance improvement activities, when applicable, in an accurate and timely
  • Ensures completion and performs reviews of all QC for non-waived testing for the POC departments.
Minimum Requirements:

Education

•Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and Clinical Laboratory experience in high complexity testing; OR

•Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science and Clinical Laboratory experience in high complexity testing

Licensure/Certification

•Certification as a Medical Lab Scientist or Medical Lab Technician or eligible for certification to be obtained within 12 months of date of hire.

Experience

•Minimum two years in clinical lab setting

Preferred Qualifications:

•Master's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science and Clinical Laboratory experience in high complexity testing
