POSITION OVERVIEW The Automation Technician I supports the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of control systems, acting as a key interface between electrical construction teams and controls engineers. They work more independently on routine tasks and begin to lead small portions of projects. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Lead installation and wiring tasks for control panels, motor control centers (MCCs), and instrumentation. Perform intermediate wire terminations and panel modifications. Configure and calibrate sensors, transducers, and other instrumentation. Troubleshoot motor control circuits, VFDs, and basic PLC connections. Conduct I/O checks, loop tuning, and initial system startup. Assist in training junior technicians on standard procedures and safety practices. Interface with customers to provide updates on progress and resolve on-site issues. Maintain compliance with safety and industry standards throughout installation and testing. LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES N/A QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Associate’s degree in Industrial Automation, Electrical Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience. 2-4 years of experience in automation and control systems. Proficient in reading and interpreting control wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and one-line diagrams. Hands-on experience with motor controls, instrumentation, and variable frequency drives (VFDs). Strong troubleshooting skills for resolving wiring and configuration issues. Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. EQUIPMENT & APPLICATIONS /WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting and Carrying – Frequently lifting and carrying tools, materials, and equipment, often weighing up to 25-50 lbs. Climbing and Balancing – Using ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to reach high areas for wiring and fixture installations. Crouching and Kneeling – Working in tight spaces like crawlspaces, attics, and vaults. Standing for Long Periods – Spending hours on their feet while wiring or troubleshooting. Repetitive Movements – Engaging in repeated motions such as twisting, bending at the waist, kneeling, stripping wires, twisting connections, and using hand tools continuously Working in Uncomfortable Positions – Holding tools or equipment overhead, reaching into confined areas, or maintaining awkward postures. Exposure to Weather – Working outdoors in extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind Hand and Finger Dexterity – Grasping objects with the use of fingers, palm and wrists to hold/and or manipulate objects (hammers, saws, pencils, pens, etc.) Pulling and Pushing – Pulling wires through conduits or pushing heavy equipment into place. Carrying Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Wearing and carrying safety gear like hard hats, gloves, harnesses, and boots.
