*As part of the application process for faculty positions at the University of Oregon, candidates must provide a statement outlining their historical, current, and future efforts to promote equity, inclusion and diversity in their professional careers. This might include collaboration with local communities, organizations, political involvement or initiatives to advance equity and inclusion within the university. The School of Architecture & Environment at the University of Oregon acknowledges that professional design schools and design pedagogy in North America have historically disproportionately excluded cultural perspectives outside European and colonial traditions. To build our shared capacity to take intellectual risks and to advance knowledge, we are dedicated to creating a community that fully includes students, designers, and scholars whose excellence depends on the breadth of their experiences and perspectives and who are committed to working in a multicultural environment. Pursue research and teaching that enables ecological and inclusive design and culturally appropriate civic engagement in designing resilient public places.
• Deeply skilled at finding design and planning solutions to injustice and increasing human and ecological health and landscape resilience to climate change.
• Have administrative/leadership/mentoring experience and community/professional service records that support junior faculty, local communities, and the profession.
• Have a record of supporting justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The position is expected to strengthen the department's academic leadership, offering vital guidance and mentorship to junior faculty members. The Department of Landscape Architecture within the College of Design is the oldest landscape architecture department west of the Mississippi. We are the only landscape architecture program in Oregon, administering accredited MLA and BLA professional degrees and a PhD. Our curriculum focuses on understanding landscapes across multiple scales. The department offers an engaged design education through the Urban Farm, the Fuller Initiative for Productive Landscapes, and the Landscape for Humanity initiative. We partner with community groups and the local American Society of Landscape Architects chapter to focus on real-world projects that are carried through to completion. The department also leads the Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Program under the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) with 21 partner universities across the Pacific Rim, offering various global engagement opportunities and resources to students and faculty.
The Department of Landscape Architecture serves graduate and undergraduate majors, including Bachelor of Environmental Design, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture, and PhD in Landscape Architecture. Our programs provide rigorous, accredited curricula combining theory, research, design skills, and extensive real-world studio instruction so that students become effective and creative leaders in the profession.
The College of Design is a global leader of sustainable design education and exemplar on the University of Oregon campus for our activities addressing diversity, equity and inclusion. The College is an international leader in promoting the Spatial Justice Initiative, which brings visiting scholars to the School of Architecture & Environment to teach and research on spatial justice issues. Students and faculty in the department of landscape architecture have crafted a DEI Toolkit, which proactively guides our actions in making the department an inclusive place to work and study. The College offers a supportive and collaborative teaching and research environment and actively encourages applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds.
