Founded in 1769, Dartmouth is a private, liberal arts institution, and member of the Ivy League, consistently ranking among the world's greatest academic institutions. Dartmouth holds the Carnegie classification as an R1 doctoral university, indicating very high research activity. Across its 269-acre main campus, located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth enrolls over 4,500 undergraduates and approximately 2,200 graduate and professional students. Dartmouth employs nearly 950 faculty (620 tenured and tenure-track) and over 3,100 staff. Dartmouth offers opportunities to create and apply knowledge through its distinctive schools; the undergraduate Arts & Sciences , the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies , and its three leading professional schools - the Geisel School of Medicine (founded 1797), Thayer School of Engineering (1867), and the Tuck School of Business (1900).

The Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society (the Irving Institute) was founded in 2017 by Arthur L. Irving, along with his wife, Sandra Irving, and their daughter, Sarah Irving, to support Dartmouth's efforts to take on the broader energy and society challenges. With the mission to advance an affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy future for the benefit of society, the Irving Institute leverages Dartmouth's strengths in interdisciplinary teaching and learning, engineering, business, and sustainability by providing solutions to critical energy problems faced by communities and regions across the globe.

The Irving Institute serves as a central hub on campus, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship by translating research into broader, impactful applications. By working with multiple departments and centers across Dartmouth, the Institute promotes cutting-edge research in areas such as energy system transitions, renewable energy, sustainable technologies, climate change mitigation, environmental policy, the intersection of energy and society, health, energy and climate justice, and climate adaptation. Additionally, the Irving Institute funds faculty research and supports the translation of these efforts to wider audiences. In its commitment to education, the Irving Institute supports undergraduate courses and curricula, including the sustainable energy track in the environmental studies minor. The Institute co-leads a foreign study program, hosts an Energy Justice Clinic, and offers numerous experiential learning opportunities related to energy, climate, and sustainability. Through these initiatives, the Institute enhances both the academic and practical understanding of these critical issues.

Reporting to the Irving Institute's Faculty Director, the Executive Director is responsible for developing a collective, collaborative vision and approach for Dartmouth to pursue the mission of the Institute. The Executive Director ensures overall fiscal health and operational sustainability of IIES, including management of the Institute staff and contractors, facilitating faculty and Board of Advisors engagement, and ensuring integration of the Institute into the Dartmouth campus and community. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to serve as an advocate and champion for the Institute, building relationships across campus and beyond, developing research opportunities, new initiatives, engaging external partnerships, and diversifying revenue streams through fundraising activities and extramural research funding development.

The successful candidate must possess a Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience and knowledge of current and future developments in the field of energy and society. The new Executive Director will be an engaging collaborator, with a proven track record of team building, academic interdisciplinary work, and fostering of a diverse and inclusive environment. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and thoughtful fundraiser, who thrives on external engagements and is a committed champion for resource development for the Irving Institute.
