*Job Summary: *

The Certified Medical Assistant’s Primary function is to enable providers to make efficient use of their clinic time by maintaining smooth patient flow. This individual must be able to communicate, enjoy working with people, have pleasant manners, and be flexible when working with different personalities. Must have the ability to prioritize and handle many tasks/projects simultaneously. Must have knowledge of the health care field, and medical office protocols and procedures. Must have knowledge of medical terminology and equipment. The Certified Medical Assistant will work directly with other clinical staff, administrative staff, and must be able to work independently.

*Essential Job Responsibilities: *

The Certified Medical Assistant reports to the Clinical Manager; may receive direction from the Administrator and/or Physicians. The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for carrying out primary duties as outlined by the Nurse Manager, Lead Nurse, Physician, and Administrator. These functions include, but are not limited to:

1. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with Providers, patients, patient’s families, co-workers, and others in a professional and confidential manner.

2. Demonstrates the ability to embrace the values of the clinic

3. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care/service to each patient

4. Maintains a safe and clean working environment consistent with OSHA and clinic standards.

5. Recognizes and takes action on potentially unsafe acts and conditions.

6. Demonstrates ability to operate clinic equipment such as; computers, paging systems, telephones, and fax machines.

7. Demonstrates the ability and willingness to learn unfamiliar tasks.

8. Demonstrates acceptance to change in a positive manner.

9. Fulfills patient care responsibilities such as; monitoring provider schedules and accompanying patients to exam room, assisting patients with walking, transfers, collecting specimens, and preparing for an exam.

10. Assisting Providers and/or Nurses with procedures

11. Collecting complete and accurate patient history.

12. Demonstrates accurate and timely charting.

13. Fulfills clerical responsibilities that may include obtaining/ordering labs as directed by the Provider or Nurse, completing referrals, lab forms, and requisitions accurately.

14. Fulfills environmental responsibilities such as setting up procedures/ trays using sterile technique,

15. Maintains appropriate records; signs out medications at each time used.

16. Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities, that vary according to state law, which may include IM/SQ injections, administration of PO medications, checking vital signs, setting up trays for all clinic procedures, assisting in all clinic procedures, cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance, sorting, storing, supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms, capillary and venipunctures, proper handling of specimens such as vaginal, stool, blood and urine.

17. Demonstrates a clear understanding of Medical terminology as it pertains to obstetrics and gynecology.

18. Alerts supervisor of any concerns affecting quality of patient care.

19. Demonstrates competency in telephone calls with all patient needs. Prioritizes, and addresses calls as they come in. Obtains clear instructions/orders from provider. Returns patient calls in order of urgency; demonstrates a clear understanding of which calls need to be handled first.

20. Actively participates in problem solving, able to assist in finding solutions to areas of concern.

21. Demonstrates competency in EMR charting.

22. Coordinate care of patients with outside providers, assist patients in scheduling necessary appointments with other clinics as indicated by the provider.

23. Demonstrates good use of time management, completes tasks in a timely manner while maintaining accuracy.

24. Complete Competency by end of orientation. Complete annual skills fair.

25. All other duties as assigned within MA scope of practice. Medical Assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice.

The Certified Medical Assistant is expected to perform other position related duties that include but are not limited to:

• Consistently demonstrates interactions with patients that are caring and professional. This includes all phone interactions.

• Attend staff and department meetings as appropriate.

*Job Qualifications:*

• Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical practice.

• Knowledge of commonly used medications and their side effects used in the clinic.

• Ability to interpret and apply medical orders.

• Knowledge of sterile field protocol.

• Understanding of the need for and evidence of consistent respect for patient confidentiality.

• Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and able to conduct oneself with the utmost professionalism regardless of the situation.

• Good sense of organization and attention to detail.

• Ability to document accurately and in a timely manner.

• Ability to work effectively with patients and co-workers.

• Consistency and timeliness in attendance.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and understand the English language.

• Ability to support leadership collaboration and initiatives.

*Education: *

• High school diploma

• Preferred - Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college certificate in medical assisting.

• National certification/registration as a Medical Assistant.

• Current BLS certification.

• Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office.

*Physical/Mental Requirements: *

• This position frequently exposes the Clinical Support Staff to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

• It requires use of universal precautions when tasks are being performed that present the possibility of exposure to blood or body fluids; this includes the use of personal protective equipment and work practices.

• This position requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.

• This position requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally it is necessary to lift and carry items greater than 50 pounds.

• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

• Frequent contact with employees, patients, and the public. Public contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people.

• Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc
