What Do We Do?
Business Unit: Strategic Metallurgy
Technical Projects with strategic importance to Carpenter Technology.
Ongoing Projects
- Develop and validate new production flow paths for premium products.
- Develop novel inspection methods to improve production work-flow and quality.
- Qualify products and/or production methods with external customers.
- Support regulatory (FAA) oversight of mission critical products.
- Improve quality of products.
- Develop new products with commercial interest.
You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:
Support technical project work conducted in the Strategic Metallurgy group. May involve shop-floor time, lab time, metallographic analysis, data retrieval and analysis, etc.
Intern will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on work while being supported and mentored by senior metallurgical professionals.

You must be:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering
- Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (especially Word & Excel)
- Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics: Self-motivated; intellectually curious, and willing to get their hands dirty"
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location.
- Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter's government contracts.
Hourly rates are based on: 1 - Program of study; 2 - Degree type (i.e., Bachelor's); 3 - Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21-$25 per hour.
Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)
Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.
