Position Summary:

Reporting to the Accounting Manager - Publishing, the Senior Accountant responsibilities include managing cash receipts, reconciling and preparing journal entries for various accounts, and ensuring accurate financial records during month-end and year-end closes. The role involves compiling financial data for budgeting, preparing schedules for tax forms, and distributing monthly financial reports to department directors. Key tasks also include reconciling general ledger accounts, resolving discrepancies, and supporting financial and regulatory audits by preparing work papers and providing necessary documentation. Additionally, the role involves assisting with ad hoc reports, projects, and cross-departmental process improvements. The position frequently interacts with internal and external customers.

This position requires working in the College Park, Maryland office one day per week.

Responsibilities

Cash and Journal Entries:

• Record and apply cash receipts within Revenue Cloud and general ledger systems.

• Reconcile and prepare journal entries for CnF-related and Money Market bank accounts.

• Prepare journal entries during month-end and year-end closes to ensure accuracy.

Financial Reporting and Budgeting:

• Compile and gather financial information for the annual budget process.

• Prepare related schedules for Forms 990, 990-T, Form 8802, and BEA-125 analysis.

• Distribute monthly financial reports to department directors to keep them informed.

Reconciliation and Discrepancy Resolution:

• Reconcile and close financial periods within Revenue Cloud to maintain financial accuracy.

• Reconcile and balance general ledger accounts regularly.

• Research and correct account discrepancies to ensure accurate financial records.

Month-/Year-End Tasks:

• Create various year-end allocation journal entries and calculate year-end accruals.

• Perform numerous asset and liability account reconciliations

• Prepare general ledger journals as needed to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Audit Support and Compliance:

• Prepare workpapers for financial statement audits and provide supporting documentation for auditors.

• Gather documents, provide reports, complete analysis, and answer questions during fieldwork for regulatory audits.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Support the preparation for and participate in annual financial statement audits and other regulatory audits.

• Work on ad hoc reports and projects assigned by accounting management, contributing to cross-departmental projects and process improvements.

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree Accounting, Finance, or other relevant discipline (directly relevant work experience in lieu of degree accepted).

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in non-profits or higher education.
• Experience with tax software.
• Experience in mid-size to large non-profits.
• Proficient in financial reporting, GAAP, and revenue recognition.
• Strong analytical skills for net revenue analysis.
• Expertise in financial close cycles and general ledger functions.
• Advanced Excel proficiency with Pivot Tables, V-Lookups, and complex formulas.
• Experience with Salesforce Revenue Cloud, tax software, and business intelligence tools (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau).
• Familiarity with third-party payroll systems.
• Proven ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing schedules.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in implementing new systems/software is advantageous.
• Self-starter with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.

Travel:

• The position requires up to 10% of travel for in-person meetings with staff as well as periodic travel to attend meetings and events as part of its core responsibilities, as well as additional travel as assigned. This position requires working in the College Park, Maryland office one day per week.

Salary:

The salary range for this position takes into account various factors influencing compensation decisions, such as skill sets, experience, training, and other business and organizational requirements. The salary listed within the specified ranges considers relevant experience. Our compensation philosophy at APS aims to maintain salaries at the midpoint of the market. As a result, we typically hire within the target starting range. Exceptional, rare cases may merit reviews above target starting range for specialized or niche skills aligned with strategic operational goals.

Hiring Range: $71,389/year - $97,268/year (USD)

Target Starting Range: $71,389/year - $79,420/year (USD)

Work Environment:

As noted above, APS offers a "Remote First" workplace. Although our offices are located on Long Island, NY; Washington DC; and College Park, MD, you can work from other places in the United States. We are flexible about work hours, but expect responsiveness during the core of the workday, Eastern Time.
