The Surgical First Assistant assists physicians in surgery and may perform specific significant surgical tasks under "professional supervision." The RNFA collaborates with the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The RNFA practices perioperative care and must have acquired the necessary specific knowledge, skills and judgment. The RNFA meets departmental standard for professional accountability. 1. Obtains at least 100 continuing education credits, 30 of which must be in the advanced category within a 6 year time-frame 2. Provides age-appropriate care, as evidenced by completion of age specific competency checklist 3. Demonstrates competency in technical skills by completion of applicable core and annual skills checklists and tests 4. Demonstrates competency in critical thinking skill as evidenced by performance in critical / emergency situations and application of Standards and Recommended Practices of Perioperative Nursing related to technical skill level 0700-1900 with on call * Florida RN license * Completion of RNFA technology program; Completion of an assisting course. * One year experience as RNFA or current staff member obtaining RNFA. Training obtained under preceptor ship from surgeons; Documentation of a minimum of 150 surgical cases within the defined specialty area * BLS, ACLS certifications required. Current credentialing as a certified first assistant.
