The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami in Miami, FL, invites applicants for a full time Research Associate II position. We seek an individual to join our Ocean Carbon Cycle and Biogeochemistry Lab in the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division of NOAA AOML in Miami, FL, to conduct experiments with foraminifera and perform geochemical and geomorphological analysis of samples collected with sediment traps.
The incumbent will conduct experiments and perform sample analysis to understand the effects of ocean alkalinity enhancement on calcification and ecological response of planktonic foraminifera. The RAII will apply microCT techniques for characterizing the calcification response of foraminifera under varying alkalinity conditions, and analyze samples collected with moored sediment traps to understand interannual changes in foraminifera flux and foraminiferal calcification.
Responsibilities include:
- supporting a sediment trap time series program,
- carrying our environmental DNA analyses,
- conducting microCT scanning and analysis,
- managing project data QA/QC and archiving,
- outreach, communication,
- Assistance with organizing and carrying out seagoing field operations,
- generation of visualization products,
- conducting statistical analyses.
Requirements:
The successful applicant must possess a bachelor's degree in marine science or a related field from an accredited university and at least 2 years of relevant work related experience. They must be highly motivated, organized, and able to adapt to a dynamic lab environment. Strong analytical and laboratory skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a close familiarity with sediment trap time series, marine sediments (specifically planktonic foraminifera), and ocean acidification research.
The position will be located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
