Applicants are required to have minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in an outpatient surgery setting, as well as up-to-date California RN License, and ACLS and BLS certifications. *ACCOUNTABILITY*:
* *The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse*: Is directly accountable to the Clinical Director. Works in collaboration with facility staff, nursing colleagues, STs, and the surgical aide. Directs non-professional staff.
* *QUALIFICATIONS*: Current RN state licensure. Minimum of 1 year of operative room experience. Current BCLS certification required. Current ACLS or obtained within six months of hire.

*PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse must be able to engage in physical activities on a daily basis. As a direct patient care provider, the Staff RN will maintain:
* Hepatitis immunization (will be provided at no cost to the employee) or documented refusal to be vaccinated.
* Evidence of negative Mantoux annually or chest X-ray every two years (will be provided at no cost to the employee).
* Ability to maintain extensive standing, moderated sitting, retracting and assisting in the transfer of patients with appropriate number of personnel and/or devices.
* Physical ability to perform CPR.
* Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds, instrumentation or equipment.

*RESPONSIBILITIES*: The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse is required to collect, interpret, record and communicate pertinent data that is relevant to the patient’s care appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Data is concurrently assessed for optimum patient care and planned discharge of the patient. *Assessment shall include*:
* Verification of the patient’s vital signs and general conditions.
* Verification of the operative procedure, site, surgeon, and anesthesiologist.
* Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with resource persons (anesthesiologist, surgeon, perioperative RN, PA, ancillary personnel).

*Planning*: The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse utilizes data collected to plan for post-op nursing care appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
* Follows the standards of care for pre-op and post-op nursing care, along with the preferences of surgeons and anesthesiologists, when planning care.
* Monitors the necessary equipment and supplies for the pre-op area and Step-Down recovery; equipment is checked and found to be in good working order.
* Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults, as necessary, with resource person (physicians, anesthesiologists and other Forest team members).
* Uses data collected to formulate nursing diagnosis about the health status and needs of the patient.
* Revises plan of care as needed based on continuing assessment of the patient.
* Conveys the plan of care to other members of the Forest team.

*Implementation*: The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients appropriate to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, meeting their physical and psychological needs:
* Identifies priorities and executes nursing care accordingly.
* Provides emotional support and comfort measures.
* Gives information or explanation to patients and their families as warranted.
* Ensures and respects the patient’s rights, privacy and dignity.
* Recognizes symptoms of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and/or other impending crisis; initiates emergency response.
* Participates in the evaluation of new supplies and equipment.
* Coordinates the activities of other healthcare professionals and ancillary staff in assisting the patient for discharge.
* Ensures and respects the patient’s rights, privacy and dignity.
* Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the post-operative phase.
* Maintains the intravenous infusion, may start new IVs as needed, discontinues IVs before discharge, records and delivers amount of solutions as ordered
* Administers medications and oxygen, as needed; documents all administration.
* Recognizes symptoms of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and/or other impending crisis; initiates emergency response.
* Properly cares for and disinfects equipment and furniture in the pre-op and recovery.
* Coordinates the activities of other healthcare professionals and ancillary staff in assisting the patient for discharge.
* Instructs the patient in self-care and in-home treatment of post-operative symptomology.
* Documents all post-operative care.
* Accurately and promptly documents unusual occurrence noted during the post-operative phase of recovery.
* Surveys patient record and recovery for QA, as needed.
* Completes post-discharge contract and call evaluations.
* Properly cares for and disinfects equipment and furniture in the pre-op and recovery.
* Reports and labels out-of-service equipment malfunction and documents return to service of equipment.

*Evaluation*:
* The Pre-Operative/Post-Operative Registered Nurse continuously evaluates the patient’s response to nursing interventions and modifies the nursing plan of care to achieve the desired outcome.
* Collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient plan of care according to the changing needs of the patient appropriate to adolescence, adults and geriatric patients.

*Professional Characteristics and Evaluation*: Behavior reflects professional and cooperative attitude. Seeks assistance from other professional resource persons to improve skills, knowledge, and practice. Acts as resource person and provides direction to other members of the center’s team. Assists in the orientation of new personnel. Identifies unsafe patient care practices and/or unsafe environmental aspects, assuming responsibility for intervention. Helps create a healthcare environment that is nurturing, healing, and educational for patients, families and staff. Communicates openly and respectfully with patients, families and staff. Maintains patient confidentiality.
