Lead, Horticulturist

JOB SUMMARY:
Supports management in directing and coordinating horticulture crew activities; skilled at plant identification by using of botanical / common names; demonstrates the ability to design and install landscapes with the understanding of plant nomenclature; reinforcing all UO safety guidelines, and UO policies and procedures; completion of all essential written documentation; and the ability to communicate and organize with other UO departments.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans and delegates work assignments among qualified crewmembers. Communicates performance expectations in an effort to ensure proper completion of tasks; provides feedback for recognition and performance improvement.
- Actively reinforces company safety guidelines and programs reports non-compliance. Monitors employee's productivity, work habits. Leads work startup and stoppage, schedules breaks. Monitors care, condition, use and storage of tools, equipment and other UO property. Maintains material inventories. Monitors compliance with wardrobe/grooming standards, driving policy, radio usage, and other UO policies.
- Ensures proper completion of documentation. Captures written behaviors using the Lead Observation Report to support managerial and supervisory documentation.
- Communicates and coordinates with other departments or crafts as needed. Communicates resource needs and work plans to Supervision. Provides two-way communications between work team, supervisor, and other management and HR personnel.
- Performs job duties as described in non-lead job description. Maintains and shares job knowledge assists in developing employees.
- Assists with training new and current employees. Assigns who will provide daily training.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SCOPE:
Responsible for overseeing and running daily activities of a horticulture crew; including monitoring and reporting irrigation and pest control issues. Furthermore, in addition to meeting with management on a consistent basis and discussing daily and future activities.
EDUCATION:
- High school degree or GED is required. Associate's degree (AA) in Horticulture or equivalent from two-year College or technical school is preferred. See specific job description.

- College Horticulture Program or equivalent training is preferred:
- HOS 1010 Introduction to Horticulture
- ORH 1510 Ornamental Plant Materials I
- ORH 1511 Ornamental Plant Materials II
- SOS 2101 Soils and Fertilizers
- ENY 1007 Principles of Entomology
- BOT 2501 Plant Physiology
EXPERIENCE:
- One year of landscape maintenance experience is required.
- Five to seven years' experience of landscape maintenance in an upscale commercial, residential, or resort environment or other horticultural enterprise is preferred;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Florida Driver's License/ required to operate company vehicles.
- Preferred one of the following: Florida Certified; Nursery Professional or Florida Certified Landscape Technician; Landscape Maintenance Operator; Certified Arborist.
