Department of Psychology and Counseling

The School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City seeks to hire three 9-month, tenure-track, benefits-eligible, Assistant Professors in the Department of Psychology & Counseling to begin in Fall, 2025.

The Department of Psychology & Counseling is a community of psychological scientists, practitioners, and educators who are dedicated to our students' academic and career success. Our Department has an undergraduate program in Psychology, a master's program in Counseling (accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council MPCAC ), and a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology (accredited by the American Psychological Association APA ). The School Counseling emphasis area within our master's program is accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Our Department also houses the Community Counseling and Assessment Services (CCAS) clinic, an in-house training facility that provides services to the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. We are excited to support and grow our graduate and undergraduate programs, and CCAS, through these three Assistant Professor positions.

Job Description

The Department of Psychology & Counseling seeks colleagues who demonstrate potential for excellence in research, who will contribute to our three academic programs, and who show dedication to graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The candidates selected for these positions will join a collaborative group of faculty and staff. Successful candidates will cluster into one of three areas:

Assistant Professor Position : Counseling or Counseling Psychology (Open emphasis area): We are seeking candidates from any area of research and teaching specialization, but strong preference will be given to those with interests and experience in the area of Couples & Family counseling. Teaching opportunities within our MA program include: Theories & Techniques of Family Systems Therapy; Couples & Family Practicum; Theory & Methods of Sexual Counseling; and any of our core course offerings such as Introduction to Professional Counseling, Career Development, etc. Candidates must have a doctorate in Counseling Psychology or closely related field.

Assistant Professor Position : Counseling or Counseling Psychology (Open emphasis area) : We are seeking candidates from any area of research and teaching specialization, but strong preference will be given to those with applied research interests and interests in teaching across our core course offerings within the MA program, including: Introduction to Professional Counseling; Career Development; Assessment Methods in Counseling; and Theories of Counseling. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to our School Counseling emphasis area. Candidates must have a doctorate in Counseling Psychology or closely related field.

Assistant Professor Position : Psychology (Open emphasis area) : Area of research specialization is open, but a strong preference will be given to candidates with applied research interests in Cognitive or Clinical Psychology. We seek candidates with interests in teaching undergraduate and graduate Cognitive Psychology, undergraduate and graduate Statistics, and undergraduate Biopsychology. Candidates must have a doctorate in Psychology or a closely related social science discipline.

For these Assistant Professor positions, successful candidates will be expected to: maintain an active research program that contributes to the Department's commitment to encourage and respect diverse perspectives, foster social equity, and lead change through innovative research; maintain a record of peer-reviewed publications; seek and secure external funding as needed for sustained research productivity; mentor students, including as research supervisors for students within our Clinical Psychology PhD program; and provide service commensurate with the Assistant Professor rank.

We also expect our colleagues to contribute across our three academic programs, as well as teach classes in different modalities, such as in-person, blended, online synchronous, and online asynchronous.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree (awarded by 9-1-25). For the Positions and , candidates must be licensed or license-eligible (LP, LPC, SCS) in Missouri.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with prior university teaching experience; a record of scholarship commensurate with the Assistant Professor rank; and for the two Counseling/Counseling Psychology positions, prior clinical supervision.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary is commensurate with credentials, experience, and demonstrated potential for success in externally funded research.

Full time 100% FTE , benefit-eligible, 9-month ranked academic appointments to begin Fall Semester 2025. Summer teaching is available.
