Orthopedic Physician Assistant

Orthopedic Physician Assistant will provide services to the medical staff, support staff, inpatients and outpatients Brooke Army Medical Center. Occasionally, the HCWs may need to provide services at 3551 Roger Brooke Dr, Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234 as needed to meet its mission. While specific tasks are outlined as listed below, responsibilities include but are not necessarily inclusive of tasks in which the HCW shall provide.

All services shall be performed in accordance with established principles, practices, and ethics of the medical, and specialty professions/organizations. The standards of performance shall reflect the degree of care, skill, and learning expected of a reasonably prudent Orthopedic Physician Assistant.

Qualifications:

ü Degree/Education: Bachelor's degree with completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

ü Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

ü Experience: 12 months of orthopedic experience in the last 36 months in an accredited health care hospital resulting in knowledge of hospital or clinic routines and procedures in orthopedics; including orthopedic trauma service, pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and/or spine.

ü Board Certification: Yes

ü Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant as required.

Job Responsibilities The Physician Assistant shall perform and provide medical examination and treatment as required by the MTF, Chief, Department of Primary Care and Community Medicine (DPCCM), or Counterpart, at each location. The Physician Assistant shall perform the services, which a military Physician Assistant with similar training and experience would be called upon to perform while in a similar duty assignment. The Physician Assistant shall be responsible for a regularly appointed clinic, compatible with workload and, in addition, provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur. HCW Duties: The duties for the HCW are as follows: In addition to the duties listed below, both Physician Assistants shall perform essentially the same non-supervisory duties as those required of any military or government civil servant.

See initial orthopedic consults; Order/interpret appropriate radiographic exams to evaluate orthopedic injuries and consult with Orthopedic staff when necessary.

Brace or splint extremity injuries as needed and place personnel on profile or quarters in accordance with service policy.

Perform topical and local infiltration anesthesia; manage nonsurgical orthopedic conditions and perform joint injections or aspirations when clinically indicated.

Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).

Technically direct and provide care for a variety of diseases and types of injuries (i.e., acute, chronic, and minor trauma), and the skills to recognize emergency conditions in order to diagnose, prescribe for and treat diseases, disorders, and injuries, and refer the more complex cases and serious conditions to qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.

Technically direct and teach other staff, provide educational lectures, and participate in in-service training to staff members.

Promote preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviors and self-care through both formal and individual education and counseling.

Prescribe in accordance with approved treatment protocols and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee approved medications and immunizations. Identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral to a physician.

Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice.

Establish collaborative rapport with physician, nursing, and others in order to promote and facilitate primary care services.

Teach patients and family member's healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving wellness.

Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement.

Staffing and Scheduling:

Duty hours shall consist of 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts and on occasion, other shift lengths may be

specified. Hours scheduled for shifts do not include travel time involved in reaching the medical

treatment facility. All BAMC Orthopedic Clinics require staffing between the hours of 0500-

1900hs, Monday - Friday.

The minimum scheduling need is to fill three shifts each day, seven days a week, with one provider per shift. In the event that additional shift coverage is required so that federal and military physicians can engage in mission-directed activities, the contractor shall be notified 30 days in advance of specific days on which additional shift coverage is required. The contractor shall provide a final schedule to the COR no later than 90 days prior to the start of the work month, which shall be incorporated into the department's overall timetable. The contractor

shall submit the name of the contract employee and with each day and shift filled by the contractor.

Place of Performance:

The work to be performed under this contract shall be at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Brooke Army Medical Center. HCWs shall receive notification two weeks prior to the reassignment to another location with a 40-mile commuting radius of their assigned MTF.
