The project editor oversees the editorial and production process from unedited manuscript to printer-ready proofs for 25-30 books annually. Reports to Editorial, Design, and Production (EDP) Manager.

Job Duties:
  • Assists with development of printed and electronic marketing-oriented communications, ensures quality, and makes recommendations to provide strategic and effective marketing communications to targeted customer groups. Preparing for and attending seasonal list and launch meetings to discuss book projects assigned to the production editor.Assists with design, layout, and written content for electronic, print, merchandise, promotional, multi-media communications and graphic arts projects. Reviews items for Style Guide compliance, making changes as needed. Assist with web site content, makes edits, and updates. Assists with marketing campaigns, including production and publicity photos. Evaluating book interior and dust jacket or cover designs; proofing jackets and catalog pages.Monitors progress of projects. Communicating with authors to keep them apprised of coming stages in process and handle any problems that arise. Evaluating proof markup from author and preparing it for returning to the typesetter; checking subsequent rounds of proof.Evaluating book manuscripts to determine the level of copyediting needed, which freelance is best suited for the work required, and whether any further author work is needed before copyediting begins. Copyediting an occasional foreword, preface, or afterword as necessary.Overseeing freelance indexers and copyediting indexes. Engaging the services of freelance copyeditors and typesetters and scheduling, monitoring, and evaluating their work. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.


Job Location

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications, or related field.

Equivalency Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in English, History, Classics/Letter, Social Science or related field; and at least 24 months' experience in editing or publishing Familiarity with Adobe Creative CloudDemonstrated knowledge of Content Management platformsExperience working with Title Management or similar web-based project/information management databaseAt least 1 year experience working as an editor for books, journal or magazine publisher
