Denver CO United States University of Denver Full time

This is a general posting that will serve to create a pool of applicants for adjunct faculty openings throughout the academic year. Should we have an opening and be interested in pursuing your application, we will contact you with specific information.

As the Universitys largest and most varied academic unit, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is comprised of artists, learners, performers, scholars, scientists, and teachers across 21+ departments, programs, schools, and centers and acts as a central hub where many of the University's disciplines intersect. Nearly all 6,000 undergraduates at the University take liberal arts courses with us, and about one-third of these students declare a first major in a CAHSS program. Most of our departments, programs and schools offer master's or doctoral programs. CAHSS scholars, artists, instructors, staff, and students collaborate in a shared quest for knowledge about the human condition and the development of skills to improve our local and global communities. The diverse scope of CAHSS allows our students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed at nearly any career in todays global society.

Department Summary

The Gender, Womens, and Sexuality Studies Program offers undergraduate students a vibrant and rigorous course of study that cultivates a critical understanding of the role that gender, and sexuality plays in the construction of identities and the social and political organization of culture. It welcomes students who are eager to explore the connections between and among the many meanings that gender - as well as race, class and disability - has in our lives, our scholarship, our communities, and our politics.

Position Summary

The Gender, Womens, and Sexuality Studies Program at the University of Denver requests applications for Adjunct Instructors for the academic year to teach our two, two-credit colloquia courses:

  • GWST 2981 Colloquium in Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies, Winter term 2025 (2 credits, course runs from early January to mid-March)
  • GWST 2982 Colloquium in Gender, Womens and Sexuality Studies, Spring term 2025 (2 credits, course runs from late March to mid-June)

In general, these courses reflect current trends within the field of gender and womens studies, draw on multiple disciplines, and are engaging for undergraduate students. They should be unique to GWST and not resemble courses taught in other departments at DU. For the two credit colloquia series, we encourage courses that integrate applied learning, service-learning and community engagement pedagogies that help students better understand how feminist, gender and queer theory informs the world around them.

Because this course only meets once a week, we encourage topics and pedagogies that lend themselves to active, engaged learning.

Our colloquiums are taught in- person on our campus in Denver and are currently scheduled for an hour and fifty minutes on Fridays.

Essential Functions

Job requirements include teaching a 10-week course on campus (i.e., one weekly class for 110 minute), holding weekly office hours (either on campus or virtually, via Zoom video-conferencing), assigning and evaluating papers and exams as appropriate, and being available to assist students with course requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods to engage diverse student populations effectively. Willingness to complete DU training on Canvas if not already experienced in using many features of this program, including assignment submissions, discussion boards, quizzes, and the gradebook.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree or ABD in gender/feminist/queer/ethnic studies or related field Previous college/university teaching experience Experience using any course management software in teaching online or conventional classes previously (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, or similar) Availability to teach classes "face-to-face" in physical classrooms at the University of Denver.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Gender/Feminist/Queer Studies or related field Previous experience teaching a college-level course as the primary instructor. Experience interacting with and effectively teaching diverse communities of students.
